This niove . ment of the Oregon City people will be a lasting tribute to the memory of Dr. McLoughlin. tit COOK DISCREDITED Oiegonian "The darkness deepens' hbout Dr. Cook. Men having actual knowledge of Arctic "con ditions have believed in him Jjut little. Pew in New York ,or in London have had faith in him at all. It is the common opinion that his stories, both as .to Mt. McKiuley and thejourney to the Pole, are fabrications. New incidents, seemingly con firming this judgment, are con tinually coming to light. Two men appear who" confess the' were principals iu the fabrica tion of his astronomical and other observations for submis sion to the University of Oopen- . iagen. , . It must be admitted that these men are not, themselves, ad mirable characters, since thet . .first helped forward a fraud, and afterward s--not getting the mdney promised them exposed it. But the proofs they submit, when examined by competent persons, will tell; and then they ,may be dropped out of the ac count. . It its all but incredible that any man should attempt a fab Tication of this description. .Even yetj it is well to wait for "the final judgment of those com petent to express an opinion on the date and details furnished Dr. Cook., if they. are .actually; fraudulent, no ingenuity can i tliseuiee thert, or protect him from the scorn, of the tworld. fl These statements by men wholi profess to haVe made up Cook'd "calculations" for .him, followl hard upon the remarks by Pro fessor It. C. Parker, of Columbia University, on Cook's alleged ascent ot Mt. McKinley. Pro fessor Parker, accompanied Dr. Cook on. the Mt., McKinley ex pedition, and 1 declare it impos- si bile to believe that Cook had f reached the summit. Cook, he fiaj'S, "knew nothing df moun stain climbing, had no scientific training, and seemed to realize! Ms total incompetence for such work." It appearing impossi ble to reach the fop of the ..mountain that year, Professor' Parker returned, and Cook re mained behindy to "hunta little," as he said ana to . "look over some of the nearest glaciers." Parker's analysis of Cook's statements leaves "the explorer. in a pitiful, position. By his barometers, Cook saye, he found the height of the. mountain to- be 20,300 feet, But the highest barometer scale wq had'," says Parker, "was only,28,000 feet." Parker knewtJbecause he Was, in fact, ifl3ha?ge ,p-the expedi tion. As to -Cook's qualifica tions, Parker nay's that he very muoh doubts whether, if placed in the streets of New York, with Vthe best instruments made, J)r. f)ook "could calculate his iati- Winnipeg, Manitoba, Deo. 11 -Bishon - Pascal, ' who has charge of the diocese of Princ Albei t, which embraces the sub Aiciic country to the North o this oil', bring? back with him a story of the finding of traces of a balloon in which S. A. An dre, Swedish explorer, attempt ed to drift across to the North Pole. One of Bishop Pascal's mis sionaries reported to him that while working among the iEski tii OS of the Arctic region, he me a tribe which had some of the plunder with them. These na tives had in their possession a quantity of rope of a quality which they could not get in a barter from ships which enter the Arctic Sea. When questioned, the IJski mos told that many years be fore they had come across two white men who came down out of the sky in a "white house." These men had afterward starv ed to death, and the natives had seized upon the balloon, the cordage of which they had con verted to their uses. Bishop Pascal instructed the missionary to return ana get further details. DRIVERS WANTED For. slip, wjieel nniUFrpanq. scrapers alj head fcf'iFor teij Spring Cauyolt. Wages $35 and $40 per month.
