of tho premiums awarded tills exhibit.
It received about SO per cent of all the

not to be outdono by other products, are
also prize-winners, tho C-weeks-old lit

of Trout Creek being awarded first pre
mium for the premium for the prettiest
baby under 0 months old.
Tins section was not represented in
a considerable number of tho clasees of
exhibits at the fair which is probably
accounted lor because of the newness
of the country, there not now being the
diversity of farming pursuits in the
Madrae country which will probably be
represented a few years later, when this
district will be ablo to enter exhibits in
almost any class and secure creditable
premiums. A detailed list of the pre
miuros awarded to this section follows

amount of material placed on exhibi
tion tills school was awarded us many

not excelled by any other school m the
county.

Prospoots Of Irrigation For This Sec
tion In Comparatively Short
Time -Work Done la
Preliminary
That all of tho country North of
Crooked River in the Northern part of
Crook. CQwntry is to iiqve irrigation in
the near future, is tho plan now being
worked out by a Mr. Rogers arid sou,
who have been connected with several
irrigation projects in Idaho. They are
assisted in their work by Engineer Stev
eeon,whoia recognized as a prominent
and able man in this kind of work.
Two of the moat recent enterprises that
these men have been interested in, and
have helped to build, are the Payette
segregation that covers about 80,000
acres and the Owyhee segregation which
covers about 150.0Q0 acres.
It is thought by these men that the
most practical way to furnish irrigation
for this section, including tho Agency
Plains, is to conserve the water supply
in the mountains by constructing large
reservoirs, and with this end in view-
Mr. Rogers and his party have decided
to look into the matter very thoroughly
and get a definite knowledge of the stor
age capacity that can be obtained.
Thoy have fitted out camping equip
ment at this place, expecting to take
several weeks to look into the matter,
which will inclpdo n visit to all the
larger lakes ib the Cascade Mountain?
whose drainage flows thin way, when
accurate data will bo gnthhercd con
cerning quantity of water available for
irrigation purposes. Their first camp le
expected to be in the vicinity of Crcs
cent Lake, which it is thought will be
the main source of water supply.
The party spent Thursday and Friday
running preliminary linea and taking
elovations, which will aid in carrying
out their work in the future. Mr. Rog'
ere expressed nimseit as ueimr verv

much gratified with the existing condl
tions and felt confident that from prea
ent prospects tho problern would be
worked out, and as soon as preliminary
work was completed, work upon the
project would commence and be pushed
to completion as rapidly as labor could
be secured. The party upon its return
will bo in a better position to make a
more complete statement in regard to
tho futuro developments for irrigation
in tho MadraB country.
DOINGS OF RAILROAD
SURVEYORS AT MADRAS
Along with tho continued activity of
the construction of the Deschutes Rail
road and the Oregon Trunk Line up the'
Deschutes canyon to MadraB, compq iq
gratifying news of the extensive imr
provements for this city and the imme
diate vicinity, which will be carried out
as planned as fast as labor and nafpriaj
can be secured.
In the recent visits of somo flf tho
gentlemen who have not long since ac-
quired an interest in the Madras Town- '
site Company and other valuable prop
erty in this locality, among thpep invest
ors being V. p. Williamson, $ Jjpayy
stockholder in the Oregon Trun.lf Ljne,
r resident Joun i. bteyens ana (Jiuet
Engineer G. A. Kyle of thp same line,
it was learned, that the plans have been
made for the expenditure of a consider?
able amourit of money in developing
several projects at this point. These
gentlemen having the railroad eitantion
well in mind have realized the natura
resources and the prospects of develop
ment in this section of tho Deschutes
Vallpy, prjpcipally as a wheat producr
ing belt, have inyeated extensively in
the town aqi in farm property In this
locality.
Among the first improvements which
will be inaugurated by the new townsite
people-will be a large brick hotel, plans
and specifications far winch are po?v
being prepared. Several bricif business
blocks are also being considered. It is
expected these buHdinga will bp erected
as soon as the material can be secured
and placed upon the ground!, There is
now. under construction a larcB nlant
for the manufacture of brick, which d
located op ope of the repepljy purchase
tracts of V. D, Williamson adjoining tho
townsite. The men erecting the plant
have taken a contract to burn 500,000
brick in the first kiln, and it is probable
the plant will be enlarged as work pror
gresses.
Mr. Williamson is also making pre
parations to construct n largo storage '
reservoir at the mouth of Willow CreeH
gorge above the yhjlJips tract, which is '
intended besides irrigating his own land, .
which includes about 800 acres of fine
bottom land, to install a city water syg.
tern. The supply that will bo obtained
from this source will be adequate to
supply water for domestic purposes, fire :
protection and for beautifying lawns,
It baB been intimated by the Oregon
Trunk officials that Madras would ho
the first division point on that line South
of the Columbia River. With tlm
heavy investments of capitalists in this
section, nnd the extensive improvements
planned by those interested in the town,
it would indicate that the rumor is
authentic,
