OREGON'S EXPERIMENT Oregonian President Taft, in his lunch eon speech in Portland, said of Oregon and its "system": "We look toward Oregon as an ex- lty lor the home-maker had laded from recollection. To make men keenly eager to come to Oregon it is only necessary to tell them the sober truth. No exaggeration is required. Otie need not draw on his imagination at all. The plain, unvarnished statement that a farmer can clear between perimenter. We are willing to $50o and 81000 a v ear from lec you maice tne experiment and theu we shall profit by the conclusion you, in your patri otic effort to elevate popular government, shall find it satis factory.'' In a re gion where, by strenuous toil late and early, year in and year out, a man can no more than Oregon's plight, where they see Republicans, numbering two thirds the voters, unable to rep 'resent the pride and power-of the commonwealth in the United .States Senate. In citing wonderful things he .had seen in his Western trav els, the President remarked in a half-hutnorous vein: "There vvas only one thing that wasn't mentioned, that impresses itself today on me, and that is the wonderful crop of Senators, former and existing," Of course, on uis Darren miisiaes. can hardly believe it possible. But it is possible. Nay, it is commonplace. It is achieved so frequently in Oregon that many of our farmers are no more surprised by a profit of 500 an acre from fruit than the Kansas man is to make $10 rom corn. The big returns go to I he man who does his own woik and applies industry and brain3 to it. THE LAND OF SURE RETURNS Persons who desire to see the Bolitude of Oregon occupied by a happy and thriving popula tion will be encouraged by the news that the Pall immigration promises to be heavy. The ef forts to advertise the state, which the railroads and push clubs have made, are evidently yielding results. The dense ig norance of Easterners concern ing Oregon has been enlight ened somewhat and the dwell ers in the benighted regions along the Atlantic and the Mis sissippi are beginning to flock to the land of promise. They are welcome. The more the merrier. Oregon needs them and they need Oregon.
