under tho Act of Congress of Mnroh 8, 18d,

TAKEN INTO THE FOLD
It cannot but be with exceed
ing delight that the people of
litis section read that the Great
Northern Railway (Jaines J,
Hill) has included the Deschutes
Valley in its competition for
prize cereals and vegetables to
be exhibited at the National
Dry Farming Congress which
will be held at Billings, Mon
tana, the latter part of this
pionth. Because, if there were
needed additional evidence to
convince one that the Oregon
rJ?runk is a Hill proper.', j.his
last proclamation is absolutely
convincing it is assurance par
amount. But the benefit of be
ing inoluding in this competi
tion is not the greatest which
will ensue from the association.
Central Oregon is taken into
the fold ; it is to be given the
fostering care of the Hill roads,
and not left to blunder along as
best it may the care which has
caused Washington to forge
ahead of Oregon. And, Ore
gon will respond enormously
and magnificently to this adop
tion, j. J. Hill, who builds
railroads "and creates empires,
will find that Central Oregon is
a foundling well worthy his
steel, and that he will be won
derfully repaid because of his
roads building into this terri
tory. L The settlers of Central Ore
gon may Well be prepared for
such competitions as the one
now inuagurated by the Hill
roads, as many means will be
found to stimulate them to their
best efforts along this line.
'noted comet soon visible
The calculation of Frank E.
Seagrave of Providence, R. Lj
that Halley's comet will be
nearest the earth May 29, 1910,
is confirmed by the Rev. Father
George Searle of New York,
superior general of the Paulist
Fathers and widely known as
an astronorner., Feather Searle
basea Ilia calculations . on ob
servations made at the Lick
jObservatory, September i2, 13
and 14 and on the elements
given by Professors Cowell and
Crommel last March.
Father Searle states that on
May 28, the earth, and the cele
brated, comet-will be iuinjlio
centrio conjunction in longUude,;
.the longitude being 236 degrees
,48 minutes. The heliocentric
.latitude of the comet will be
jninus seven minutes. Father
Searl says there will be no act
ual transit of the comet over
-the suu disk according to those
,element8j but that a slight
change might produce one.
"At auy rate, it seems highly 1
probable," ho said, "tuat on
May 28 we shall be i'nHide the
comet's tail." : .
Writing in Hampton's maga
ssine of this periodical visitor,
Garrett P. Serviss says:
"Halley's comet has recentlj'
been traced back to 240 J3. C.,
but its return has probably
been made much longer than
that. Halley discovered it in
1082 and predicted its return in
, 17D8. Halley died in 1?42, 10
years before the fulfillment of
his prophecy. Halley's comet
travels a long elliptical path
mound the sun which measures
ASO,000,000 miles. Its journey
time varying on .account of the
attraction or repulsion of the
obstacles, which it ineets. Its
laBt appearance in our sky, was
in 1836. It is now approaching
the ear.th and will be visibje to
the naked eye in the late Fall;
It will slowly brighten during
next Winter, being visible from
nearly all parts of the earth.
It will reach-perihelion April
18. 1010. It will then be 00,
000,000 miles from the sun. Its
greatest brightness is expected
to occur after its perihelion pas
sage, when it will draw nearer
the earth, and be visible in both
the morning and evening sky."
Professor Serviss adds this
statement: 'One of 'the most
surprising discoveries of astron
omy is Mint of the rapid motion
of the whole solar system to
ward a point in the Northern
part of the sky. This motion
takes. place at the rate of at
least 800,000,000 miles a year.
Thus we are continually being
borne into a new region of
space." ,
