Surveys Conflict Over
Crooked River
Dirt began to fly ia Crook County,
Monday mornng-, on the much-heralded
Hill railroad into Central Oregon, when
a large construction force sent in by
Porter Brothers, contractors of the Ore
con Trunk Lino, began work at tiie
crossing over Croaked River near Trail
Crossing. Men and teams are workjng
on both sides of the river at that point,
and a Jorge construction force is being
assembled for work in both directions
from the river.
Like "Iloratius at the bridge," Porter
Bros, are holding the Crossing against
all comers, and the hurrying in of con
struct! on forces to this end of the line
is significant of two facts: One, that
the Oregon Trunk Line has purchased
the Central Oregon purvey made last
year by the D. I. & P. Company, and the
other, that the war between the Hart I
man and the Hill forces is to be contin
ued on South after the Deschutes can
yon is left, and no opportunity over
looked for securing some strategic ad
vantage. That the Cent ml Oregon sur
vey lias been acquired by the Otegon
Trunk Line there enn be no doubt, for
the Oregon Trunk hns no survey of its
own further than eight miles South of
Madras. The Central Oregon survey
and the survey of the Harriman road
cross Crooked River at identically the
same points, practically the same hubs
being used, and the commencement of
work by Porters Bros at that point can
mean only that the Oregon Trunk has
purchased the Central Oregon survey
and has put Its construction forces at
work at tho crossing over the river, to
hold it against the Harriman line
Robert Ilea, Who made the survey for
the Central Oregon lino, has been placed
in charge of the construction work for
tho Oregon Trunk Line at TiallCroBs-
ng, which is another indication that the
Central Oregon survey has been pur
chased by them, and will bo utilized by
the Hill lino in the construction of its
road South from Madras. The Central
Oregon survey has been approved by
the Interior Department, and the acqui
6ltion of those rights and tho prior oc
cupation of tho brldgo-Blte on Crooked
River has given tho Oregon Trunk Line
a Btrategio advantage tin that portion of
tho line, as the fact that both roads

ng up a number of wagona with camp
supplies which wero purchased of local
merchants, they loft Immediately for

Who returned from Portland last Thura-
ay, has been busy since his arrival
buying camp supplies hay, grain, lum

Oregon Trunk to begin work South Of
Madras. Thero was no warning from
Harriman scouts of the approach of tho
enemy, and tho bridge was being
held by Horatlufl--that .is to say, by
Porter Croa, before tho doughty fight

designs. ,
Tho Central Oregon survey, which th
Oregon Trunk Ljno has apparently etc
quired, was made by tbo D, I. & P. )o,
last Fall, with a view at that titfle of
connecting up with an extension of the
Columbia Southern from. Shaniko. The,
survey runs South from Mitdras
through Qpal Prairie and around Juni
nor Bulte. across Orooked River one
mile below Trail Crossing, and from
there to Redmond. It was tho firiit stir
vey made South from Madras by that
route, and proved to be a line of easier
grades than had been secured by former
surveys, all of which crossed the divide
at Lamonta and fonnd a crpssing over
Crooked River at O'lfeils. There is
room fr a .dozen Hoes by cither route
South of Madras, but the crossing over
Crooked River secured by the Central
Oregon survey and now acquired by the
Oreeon Trunk Lino is conceded to be
tho moBt advantageous that could be
located, and the guarding pf that point
by the Oregon Trunk Line indjpates the
value which is placed upqn it.
RAILROAD HOSPITAL TO
BE LOCATED AT MADRAS
Harriman Road Will Establish Hospl
tal Headquarters Hare For
Construction Force
Drs. Waffle and Kettle, members of
tho medical corps of the 0. R. & N.
railroad, have been in Madras several
days during the past week, looking np a
location for a hospital to be established
at this place for tho care of the laborers
and employes on the Harriman line un
der construction in this section. Dr,
Waflio is one of the assistants of Dr. K,
A. J. MacKenzie, chief surgeon for the
Harriman lines in Oregon, and since the
commencement of actual construction
on the Deschutes Railroad, has been ap
pointed chiet surgeon for Twohy Bros.,
wbo have tho contract for building the
Deschutes line for Harriman. Dr. Ket-
tel will have personal charge of the hos
pital to be located at this place.
A building for the location of the hos;
pital has not been secured in Madras,
although it is definitely stated that the
railroad hospital for the construction
force on this end of the Deschutes line
will bo located here. When construe
tion work get? fttly under way on the
Harriman lino there will be several
thousand laborers employed on this end
of the work. The medical caro and at
tention required' by this large force, as
well as tho sanitary precautions neces
sary in the numerous construction
camps to safeguard against epidemics of
disease, requires the presence in the
field of members of the medical corps
as a part of the construction forces. At
convenient points along tho line hospi
tals are maintained for tho care of the
sick and injured, and one of these hos
pitals will be located ut Madras.
W. A. ELLIS ASKED $500 DAMAGES '
In reporting the condemnation suit
filed in tho Circuit Court by tho Des
chutes Railroad Company against W.
Ellis and wife for a right-of-way
across their homestead Southwest of
Madras, the statement was made in
lust week's isauo ol The Pioneer that the
railroad company offered $J0O and that
Mr. Ellis asked $1000 damagoa. The
statement was hearsay, and was itieor-
rect. It has sinco been learned that the
railroad company offered tn nav flH)
for the right-of-way, and that Mr. Ellis
asked $500. although he stated that ho
believes his property will bo dahlaccd
lOOd. This cdrrection is mude as there
was no intention to create a false im
pression as to the damages demanded
by Mr. Ellis.

John F. Stevens has purchased for
the Oregon Trunk Railway Company
the entire capital Btock ol tho Central
Oregon Railroad, and now owhb all of
the charter privileges, right of way and
all other property of tho latter com
pany, saya the Portland Telegram.
Announcement of this coup on the
part of tho-Hlll peoplo is the latest do
velopment showing tho vigor with which
tho Oregon Trunk work is being pushed.

prior rights of the Oregon Trunk Line,
in the Desct.utea canyon, and temporal
rily enjoining the Do-chutes Railroad,
as the Harrimap line is known, from
obstructing the work of the Oregon
Trunk Line and from trespassing upon.
the latter company's right-of-way. Jrif

important case in their fayor, the attor
neys and contractors for the Oregon,
Trunk Line left fqr the Deschutes can
yon for thp purpose of putting in opera- .
tion and pushing forward as rapidly a
possible the plans already started fo&
the completion of the line.
It was stated by the-attorneys for tho
Oregon Trunk Line, after the decisoni 1 1
had been rendered, that the Ilill inter
ests would in no way oppose tho build
ing of the Harriman road, and that they
were ready and willing to engage in a'
compromise as to conflicting rights in
the canyon, in spite of their victory in
the federal court. It is insisted by
these attorneys that two roads can be
built in the canyon.

conflict on the river one or the other of
the companies would probably make a
change of surveyed lints, as, for-in-
stance, to the opposite Bide of the river,
