Hill Porter Bros, are the largest firm of rail road contractors on the Pacific Coast, and there is no doubt they could sum mon to their aid sufficient money to build tho Deschutes road themselves were they so inclined, but the theory that they are either playing a hold-up game on Harriman or are building the Deschutes road themselves, has beeii dissipated by the developments of th past week. Not tho least important fact from which this conclusion is drawn is the personnel of the forces which are direct ing the fight of the Oregon Trunk Line in tho Deschutes canyon. N. StoVehs, Whose recent Visit into Central Oregon gave the first inkling of the contemplated invasion of this coun try t-y Mr. Hill, whose confidential rep resentntive he is, has been in frequent conference with Attorney Kerr and Por ter Bros., it is said- Mr. Stevens is re ported to have gone Earn to make a per sonal report 4o Mr. Hill, on the rtsult of his investigations. Another important fact which has leaked out is that the Orccon Trunk Line engineers have made surveys for a bridge across the Columbia at The Nar rows. On this subject the Portland Telegram is authority for the following statement: . N. Bethel, tho big engineer and OREGON right-of-way man for the Oregon Trunk Line, who has always been a Hill man, has made surveye at theoint where it is reported that a bridge will be built across tho Columbia. Bethel conducted The Portland Evening Telegram of July31,8ays: . Madras promises to be the center of railroad-building activity by the JIarri man interests in the next few days Twohy Brofhers are skirmishing about Portland trying to pick up another gang of laborers, who are informed that this town, located 100 miles in the interior, is to be their destination. "While there is a rather Berious scarcity of labor here now because of the repeated inroads made by the warring Central Oregon contractors, it is said that one of the biggest outfits yet assembled is to be rushed in to Madras, the first town of any importance touched by t;oththe Deschutes Itailroad and Oregon Trunk- lines. This report is further borne out by the fact thata number of settlers living in cabins within several miles of Mad ras ana aiong tno JInrriman surveys have btfen notified to abandon their shacks, as the Twohy Bros, expect to begin blasting rock in that vicinity as soon as pioper outfit and equipment can be laid down at the scene of operations Porter Bros, havo already announced that they expect to pitch camp on the upper portion -of tho canyon not far from Madras. The importance of thh situation lie m the fact that it discounts ihe frequent Laest Styles Lowest Prices The Portland Oregonian'a staff corrcfh pondent at the scene of the conflicVbe . tween the Hill and Harriman forces in the Deschntes canyon has sent his paper ' the following account of the progress of . tl.e etruggle between tho rival roads: ' Grara Yalley, Or., July 30. For the first time since Porter Bros, locked, tho-. gate at the Ourtz ranch, two loaded freight wagons were sent over the road" toward the Deschutes canyon today by .'' Twohy Bros., Harriroan's contractors. The wagonB were denied the right to croos the ranch by Portor Bros', guard ' and returned to this place without at tempting to force their way through tho fence. Porter Bros, man did not offer any armed resietanca. The guarcs, two in number, simply refused to unwrap the chains, making no threats. At the time the two teams reached tho gate, H. A-Braudop, construction t ongineerj. Jay Bowerman, legal repre. sentntjve here of the Harriman inter . eats, and J. W. Twohy, were on ,tlfb - scene, Having gone out in an antomo-., bile. TIiq entire party, including ha freight wagons, returned to town, and, almost immediately Mr. Bowerman, ac companied by L. H. French, who haa ' an interested in a homestead entry on one of the tracts on which Porter Bros, have secured an option, returned to thri vicinity of the disputed gate. Mr. Bov . erman reached Graea Valley again lato this evening. "We will have a wagon road ehtranco through the canyon within a week," was his annonnrem-nt, but he refused to reveal hia plan of action at this time, and declined to discuss the subject fur ther. At the ofllce of Harrimau's con tractors it ia Btated that the eending of the two teamg to tho irate todav'was lone upon tho advice of counsel, and was simply for the purpose of ascertain ing the exact attitude of Porter Bros. Railroad laborers are now going on the works in number?. Tho ovening train brought out aont 40 men for Por ter Bros, ani about 90 for Twohy Bros.
