ALL CENTRAL OREGON "iMTER
ETED " ,
In a strong editorial last
week's Bend Bulletin advocates
government irrigation in this
section, and incidentally urges
upon Portland commercial in
terests the importance of this
matter to them. The Bulletin
takes the position that such
work in. this section will he of
immense importance to all of
Central Oregon as well as to
the section to be directly bene
filed, and to Portland as the
natural trading point of all this
territory. The editorial, in part
says :
. "If the business interests of
Portland wish to assist Central
Oregon in a substantial and
important manner and at the
same time increase their own
trade field by helping to de
velop a new section, thej' can
do so by bringing all available
pressure to bear on the Rec
lamation Service to induce it to
undertake at once an irrigation
project in Central Oregon. The
project to which the Bulletin
refers is the one which contem
plates the building of a storage
reservoir on upper Crooked
River and the reclamation of
S0,000 acres, mostly in private
ownership, in the Madras sec
tion. Surveys, in the nature of
a reconnaissance, have already
.been made on this project and
23,000 acres on upper Crooked
River have been withdrawn
from entry by the government.
"In Central Oregon, the gov
ernment would find everything
harmonious, and the settlers arei
.anxious for it to take hold of;
.the work. Under these condi-;
jtions, the way is open for pres
sure to be brought on the Rec
lamation Service, with a strong
probability that it would start
the Crooked River project.
, Portland should help in thie
matter for the very reason that
it would develop a large pec
tion of conntrj', entirely within
Portland's trade zone, and thus
,to Portland's benefit A govr
,ernment project in the Madras
section would restiU in bringing'
.hundreds of people into thu7
country, and the development
of one neighborhood always
adds to those about it. Every
section in this part of , the state
would benefit therefrom..
"Secretary Ballinger will , be
in Oregon during July. It's,
tricts of the state. Wheat londa
are always attractive to invest
ors and they ate already be
ginning to take notico of the
Madras' country. Stages and
antos are daily bringing in peo
ple "to look over this section,"
and even at the higher prices
that will follow the construc
tion of the railroad, there will
be a great demand for land in
this new wheat country.
Incidentally, Madras will be
one of the first towns in the in
terior t feel the stimulus given
to all the business interests ol
Ceritrnl Oregon by the approach
of the railroad. Situated at the
gateway to Central Oregon and
surrounded on all sides by n
great farming district, it will
become the trading center and
chief business point for a large
scope of country, and with the
completion of the railroad Mad
rasand the Madras country wil
come into their own.

RECENT RAINS HELP CROPS
A good rain tell in this local
ity Monday night and Tuesday
and crops throughout the dis
trict were greatly benefited
The rain was not a very heavy
one, the precipitation being
about .GO of an inch, but cool
cloudv weather followed for
several daj's, and the rain did
a vast amount ol cood to tile
-r-v n ft .
cram, reports irora amerem
sections ot the district indicate
that the rain was general.
It is difficult to estimate the
proportion of a crop that wil
be hai vested this season, for
r
the reason that some of the
crops in eacii district are tin-
nn"stionuMv as eood as have
evr been produced in this
County, while otners in the
same locality are vc-ry poor, but
Irotn reports trom all Hie dis
tricts it appears conservative to
say mat tuere win ue mucii
better than 00 per cent 01 an
averace crop harvested. Many
armeis say that the rains tins
week insure a much larger crop
than has been expected.
The persistency with which
the Piiueviile Review clings to
jhe belief that the Deschutes
Railroad will not be built leads
one to wonder if the wish is not
father to the thought.
