JSifflit ott-liun fl red th 8 of an inch of ruin felt in this vicini'y on the 9th, which is the total precipitation lor th Year other than what occurred in January and February in the form of snow, which did no ood at that time or later. Be sides, the weather has been very cold and disagreeable until this weeli, when growing weathei prevailed. Grangers on' the "Agency Plains are apprehen sive of a shortage in wheat iirict .harvest unless a timely rain conies alter tne almost inevita ble hot East winds, which blis- ,.iter the grain uiihiercifully even at. this elevation. Prinevillf :, lie view. : Conditions in this section are hot quiie as bad as they are pictured in the Review's com jneuts. In the first place, the total precipitation in this dis trict since the first of the yeai has been full' live, inches, not including a very fair ittiu vyhiihl ieirtJast week. Crops have been sulTexing more from (he cold weather than they have from, the drouth, and warm weither now, with another rain in the next week or so, will still insure a good crop in this dis trict. This is the repot t brought in by farmers from all over the district, who almost invariably Kfi.ay that crops are very baolc ward on account of the cold weather, but that they have not yet suffered from lack of mois ture. The Review's statement that the moisture which fell in tile form of snow in Jauuarj and February "did no good at that time or latei" will bring a Smile to the face of ev.ery fanner who hears it. The late cold Spring has been general throughout the country, and reports from every wheat district in Eastern Oregon and Eastern Washington indicate that the crops have been back ward on that account, but that the prospects are still good foi - better than an average crop this season. A POINT WITHOUT A POINT Although a majority of the membeis of the school board and a number of the patrons of the school who have been con sulted appear to agree that the jjiesent location of the Madras school is the best site that could be selected for it in the district, there is still some aggitation of the question of changing it. .One of the arguments advauced by those who want the location changed is that, inasmuch im the towusite compatry has never deeded the lots to the district, the school is not ''located" where the old school house now stands, and that the directors should call a meeting to vote upon the selection of a site. The gentlemen will probably admit that the Madras district has had a school for a number of years, and if it has n.ot been located where the schoolhotise Btuudu, thej' could add a good deal of weight to their argu ient by pointing out where it lias been located all these years. RAINING DOLLARS One-third of an inch of rain fell in' the Umatilla county wheat district lust week, and a Pendleton newspaper estimates (he benefit iu the Pilot Itock jbtlfa itt no ! of wn bushels of wheat per ttora, That is a big Increase and menus a good many thousands of dol lars to the fai'mers of that dis triot, fir this season's crop o wheat promises to open up at a lecord price. In the Pilot Rock district the grain was said to be suffering from drouth aind th benefit to the grain was doubt less not over estimated. l'i this section tliere was about the same amount of rain fall, or to be accurate, tht weather observerj reports .84 o tin inOli'of rain in the two show ers last week, and in. some dis tricls oouth and East of thi place there was a heavier pre cipitatiOu. The rain utiques tiotiably did much good, al though with few exceptions the farmers were not complaining as much of the drouth as they were of the cold weather. Fol lowing the rain, however, there has been "growing weather" and a marked improvement in crop conditions can be noted It is too early 10 venture an es timate of what percentage u; crop will be harvested in this locality this season for it all depends upon the weather con ditions during the remuiuder of the growing season, but with warm weatiier ana an occas . 1 ional shower the outlook grows very encouraging tor a good average yield.
