bf the prohibition law will be
commended by all law-abiding
citizens of the county. There
inay be some difference ol opin
ion as to the best manner o
dealing with the liquor ques

cf the law sinbe it has been
adopted.
At the June election in this
county last year the questioi
of prohibition was submitted
under the U cat option law, and
was adopted by a vote of nearlj
two to one, showing how strong
is the prohibition sentiment in
lue county. Jbut this strong
public sentiment is a joke and
the prohibition law is a rank
farce if "boot-legging" and
other forms of the illicit sale of
licjuor are to be permitted with
out feeling the heavy hand ol
the Jaw, and a worse conditioi
will'soon come to pass, than
ever existed in the days of the
open saloon. The prosecuting
attorney has given evidence of
his intention to conduct a vig

A MATTER OF TRANSPORTATION
A ranch of 2400 acres neai
" Olex in Gilliam county sold last
.week jut $72,000. 01 '30 ;ifr
This laud is sitjiated in the
wheat district of Gilliam coun
ty, and is similar in character
to the wheat lands of Morrow,
Sherman and Crook counties,
being semi arid and devoted to
the so-called "dry land farm
ing." The laud lies near the
Condon branch of the O. R. &
N. railroad, however, and that
accounts for the difference in
price between that land and
land in this section. It is alto
gether a matter of transporta
tion facilities.
A few years ago all of this
land in the semi-arid counties
of the stale was begging at $5
an acre, but it has been found
that with proper cultivation
good crops can be grown upon
t, and that the expense of cul
tivation and care of the land is
less than in other sections, so
that in recent years the dry
farming districts are beginning
to attract a great deal of atten
lion. The science of dry land
farming has made wonderful
strides in the last few years
and given, rail transportation,
flie districts in, which dryland
farming is practiced are today
among the most prosperous sec
(ions of the state.
