bought an Incubator for use at the agency,
Died, the infant son of Mr, and Mrs
J. E. Wilson, nt Prlneville, Monday, Feb.
15, 1909, aged two wefcks. Interment
was held nl Madras cemetery Tuesday
afternoon.
A large crowd attended the Cook auc
tion sale on Agency Plains, and the nunv
erous articles sold brought good prices.
Col. W. H. Reynolds of Culver was the
auctioneer in charge of the sale.
The entertainment given by the pupils
of Madras public school at Sanford's hall
last Thursday evening was a pleasant oc
casion for all who attended, and the young
people wno had th program In charge
deserve much praise for the success rif
the entertainment. After the musical and
literary programme w,u completed bas
kets were sold, and the neat sum of $30
was realized for the baseball team, for
whose benefit the ttatertainmcrit ' was
given,

in Madras last Thursday to attend A blar
ing in a contest ol the homestead entry of
Clyde I). Creek, who fitrd on land in the
Culver country several years ago. Owing
to a failure in the service of the notice of
contest, the- hearing was not held last
Thursday, and it will be necessary to se
cure service by publication as it is said
the defendant no longer resides in this
vicinity. Mr. Dehrman returned to Port-
and Thursday afternooh.
Mrs. Nancy H. Lemon nnd Mis.
Dwlght Roberts of Culver were in town
last Thursday, the former attending a
hearing in a land contest. The contest
was brought by Mm. Lemon against the
homestead entry nf Vernie DelashtnUtt on
the ground of abandonment. No defense
was made to the contest. Delashmutt
formerly resided at Madras for a short
time, but after filing Upon a homestead
left this locality and has not returned.
Mrs. Roberts, J. T. Robinson and Geo.
Rowan were witnesses for Mrs. Lemon
at the hearlngi
Jack Sommers, who is connected with
the Pioneer Telephone Company, was in
town the last of the week looking after
telephone matters at Madras, Mr. Som
mers says that his company Is contem
plating a number of improvements in the
telephone service at this place, including a
switchboard at Madras nnd a local ser
vice. Several changes will be made in
the line to I'rineville, reducing the num
her of phpnes on the main line nnd im
proving the through service. It is also
their purpose to 'give Madras a better
long distance service by giving this place
a connection with the loni; distance line
at Heisler or Haycreek. These changes
will be made in the Spring.

Willis W. liiown of Heisler was in
town Tuesday. He has Jmt deliVed five
car loads of prime beef cattle at Shaniko
lor the Union Meat Co. of Portland
The cattle ranged better than 1 joo lbs,
and brought 44 cents. Mr. Brown has
fed about 360 head this season, and will
sell the balance later on, when he expects
a good deal better price, l'rices for beef
are on the raise, and some have already
been contracted for April delivery at 5X
cents.
