THUKSDAY 1EC. to, 1908 BUILD UP OUR SCHOOL This school district, should iiot fail, at next Saturday's meeting, to levy i tax sufli eiently large to at .least main tain the Madras school in its present eflioienoy. The district is a populous one and its growth will be rapid, in the next lew years, and a start shou'd be made towards providing the school facilities which will be demanded. Madras is centrally located, with a number of smaller school districts sur rounding it, aiid by reason of its location it should be and will become, the educational centre of a large territory. But good schools cannot be built up in a day, and it is therefore im portant that the start already inade in that direction should be followed up so that the school facilities may be gradu ally increased as there is de mand for them. To do this may necessitate the levy of a higher tax than the district has paid in the past, but it would be a short-sighted policy to fail to meet that necessity if it exists. The Madras school district should begin to formulate plans now, for the organization of "h uuion high school at thjs place at the next annual meet ing of the district, taking in as manj' of tlie neighboring dis tricts as care to come into the union high school. The state school laws provide for the es tablishment of these union high schools, and for exemption from the county high school tax for such districts a3 compose the union high school. The Bend kchool distict, which has ven wisely built up a good school and which some time ago organ ized a high echoo', it is under stood will this year be exempi from the county high school tax. Too much stress cannot be laid upon the importance ol maintaining a good school at this place, and the property owners of the district should not attempt to economize at next Saturday's meeting, at the expense of our school. serious menace to the success of the farming industry in some localities. Persons Who have not wit nessed the deptedations of the rabbits have no idea of the damage they do. The com plaint is quite common 1mm 0 that "the rabbits ruined my crop". This damnge is especi ally heavy on the more isolat ed farms, where small cultivat ed tracts will be almost entirely denuded of the growing crop by the rabbits. The humane will shudder nt the thought of this wholesale slaughter of the rabbits, but it is not wanton cruelty. The tnoii who arranged the drive are not doing it for any pleasure they will got out of the destruction of the rabbits, but because of the necessity of it for he pro tection of Iheir crops. NON-PARTISANSHIP Strange things do happen these days. The press dis patches announce that Billy Sundaj', the noted evangelist, "lotea a pistol," and that Pat Crowe, the frquullj' noted kid napper, is oonductidg evangel isfic meetings. Both of these famous gentlemen, however, may be able to explain their deviation fiom the established order of things by the simple statement that they are "nonpartisans."
