THURSDAY
DEC. 3, 1908
SPEED THE DAY
The commencement of aotua
construction work on either of
the projected railroads up the
Deschutes will mark the begin
uing of an era of prosperity in
this section, such as no oth-r
portion of Central Oregon has
ever known before. Tt will pro
vide an iin mediate casli maiket
for all the hay, grain and feed
stulfs. potatoes and other pro
diice of the farmers of this dis
trict, and nut a ood deal of
money into cii dilation at once
That will mean immediate pros
perity for the funning popula
tion, and with the farmers pros
perous, every other hnftich of
business in the community will
come in for its sh.ue.
The Madras country will not
Lave to wait for the completion
of the railroad to biing it pros
perity, for it will begin to pros
per from the da' construction
woric starts. Tlie country is
productive, and all it needs is a
market. Being immediately
tributary to the selected route
-
for the Central Oregon load, it
will be the source of supply for
the immense construction foice
which 'will be engaged there.
Speed the da' when construc
tion work begins on the Des
chutes road !
A VACANT HOUSE
There is- a vacant house in
Madras, and it has been vacant
Eince the building was complet
ed. It was built for temporary
lesidence purposes, but so far
lias had no tenant, although it
is located in a fashionable dis
trict and is substantially built.
The house appears to be a poor
investment, but times may im
prove. We refer to the recently
built "skookum house." Dep
uty Sheriff Robinson has the
key if anyoni desites to occu
py it.
GOOD PROSPECT FOR CROPS
It is too early et to begin to
prophesy a bumper crop for next
harvest, but it is not too early
to begin to hope, and the pros
pects weiv never better at this
season of the year. Early rains
brought the Fall-sown grain up
in good shape and later rains
have supplied plenty of mois
ture to keep it growing. Stock
men also report that the early
rains started the gras and that
the range was never in better
condition.
