Railroads and the election
It is not likety that there will
be any definite announcement
bi' railroad cuiisiiuclioii in Oen
iral Oregon before the end of
the year. It la true that both
Mr. Harrimau and the Oregon
Trunk Line people, supposed to
have the backing of James J.
Hill, have announced their in
tention of building lines into
this country, but there is a dif
ference between that and an an
. nounceinent that actual con
struction is to begin. An
nouncements of this character,
involving the expenditure of
live or six million dollars, can
hardly be expected on the eve
of a presidential election, and
although the election is less
than three weeks distant, it will
require some little time for mar
ket conditions to settle down
to the normal again, after the
election is over. The money
markets are invariably affected
by a presidential election, and
railroad securities are among
the first to feel the effect.
Should Mr. Brvan be elected
to the presidency, the announce
ment of railroad construction
and of similar undertakings

is noha partisan view of the sit

..the geoeral feeling of uncer
taint j' us' to what the outcome
will be should Mr. Bryan be
elected. And, it is this feeling
of unrest and uneasiness which
is responsible in almost every
instance for the tightening 01
tlie.money majket, and the haid
times wuiou ensue. However,

. In the meantime both the

wAwiKn rprt wool market
The output or wool in uregon ,
for the season lust closed is es
timntfid at 18.500.000 wounds, as

ceding year. Of this amount
U,000,000 pounds was markeied
at 8hauiko, which was Ihe latg-
est amount sold at any point in
uregon. Not only is Shaniko
the banner wool market of the
state in point of Quantity, but
'Shauiko wools," as the clip is
known among buyers, rank first
in this state, in duality, and the
big clips marketed at that place
have brought the top price eacn
rear.
Ciook county wool is all. mar
keTeU at Shaniko, and is the
Mmo factor in making that
itoint tiie banner wool market
hi tiie state. The largest clip
tf wool iir the state, and doubt
less1 ttie finest taken as a whole,
is tiie Balhwrn clip from Hoy-
creel iir tliis cbiiuty; which is j
annually sold at Shnniko. This
year the Baldwin totnpany did
not sell its wool at the public
sales, but later it was sold at a
pritfe which maintained the pre
miership of Crook county
wools. At tho first public sales
iho top piico was secured by
Joe Wagner, another Crook
county sheepman.
The Dalles, which this year
marketed only a quarter of a
million pounds of wool, was tho
biggest market Jor yaw wool in
1 he United States before the
railroad was built to Shnniko,
but the latter point doubtless
holds that honor now.
ENFORCING THE LAW
Umatilla county voted "dry"
in the Juno election and there
appears to be a determination
on the part of the oflicera of the
law to make the county dry in
fact. At least thej' are making
it an expensive business to vio
late the local option law. Two
saloonmen of P.endleton were
convicted, last week, of selling
liquor in violation of the local
option law and were fined $700
each. There are a number ol
other similar cases on the Cir
cuit Court docket in that coun
ty, and if the other defentants
iare similarly, it promises to be
a profitable term of court for
state and count'.
The local optioti law, where
invoked, should be enforced,
and a few convictions and heavy
tines for offenders will have 11
deterrent, effect on "boot-leg
gers" in any coummunity. All
good citizens, irrespective ol
their personal opinions on the
prohibition question, will desire
to see the law enforced, and u ill
applaud the efforts of the offi
cers of the law in that direction.
BAD.FOR THE FAIR
