A CORRECTION
The Pioneer published a dis
patch from Prineville last week,
in which reference was made to
some trouble in the Shaniko
water supply two years ngo.
The article in question -aa ob
jectionable to Mr. J. 0. Powlie,
of Shaniko, who has charge of
the water system at that pl.au,
and who requests that we cor
rect any impression that there
is anything wrong with the
Shaniko water. The correction
is very gladly made. In fact,
there was not, so far as we can
eee, anything in the article in
question to the disparagement
of the Shaniko water. It was
Stated that the trouble was
found to be in the reservoir,
which statement presupposes
an investigation, and shows a
proper care of their water sup
ply. Mr. Powlie says, however,
that there was no trouble of any
kind, and we are very glad to
make this correction.
OREGON TRUNK SECUR
ING RIGHT-OF-WAY
Professor Pulton says the at
tendance will reach' 100 within
the next 10 days or two weeks,
and that there will be seven or
eight new pupils in the high
school department, as that
many more havu ahead' nr
ninged 10 join those classes.
This will give an enrollment of
10 or 17 in the high school
grades, which is a good start tor
the iit st year of (hat depart
ment in the Madras school.
Prof. Pulton, Prof. Cook and
Miss Clara Horney were all in
their places Monday when school
opened and have their clas-es
organized, and the ensuing year
promises to be a very success
ful one for the Madras public
sch ol.

HARRIMAN SURVEYORS
ON TROUT GREEK
Senator Rand of Vancouver,
Washington, arrived in Madras
last Tuesda' mrrning, and the
report is current that he is here
for the purpose of securing
right-of-way for the Oregon
Trunk Line. Senator Rand was
the agent of the Harriman inter
ests in securing right-of-way on
ihe North bank of the Colum
bia during the memorable figlit
between the Hill and Harriman
interests over the North Bank
line. .At the present time, how
ever, he is in the service of the
Oregon Trunk Line, reputed to
have the backing of the Hill
interests but in any event inim
ical to the Harriman monopoly
of the transportation of central
Oregon. And, if the predicted
railroad war for the occupation
of the Descbures canyon should
materialize, Senator Rand will
fend himself lined up agaiiiPt
his old affiliations in the strug
gle for right-of way. The possi
bility of such a contingency,
however, is very remote.
The arrival of the Oregon
Tiunk Line's right-of-way agent,
eo closely following the definite
location of their line, strongly
indicates thatxhere will be no
delay in the commencement of
"construction work. The Ore
gon Trunk has already secured
some right-of way on the lower
Deschutes, and their represent
ative should expeiience no diffi
culty in securing right of way
in this section. There is every
indication that the Oregon
Trunk Line people are going to
build into this section at once,
and the Deschutes canyon road
is the one which would mean
the most to all the interests of
this section.

A party of 15 railroad" snrvej'
ors are reported to be camped
at-Sagebrush Spring, and to be
running a line down Trout
Creek to the Deschutes. The
part' is believed to be in the
Harriman employ, as they are
not connected with the Oregon
Trunk Line. The Hairiman in
terests have a survey into this
countrj' from the North, known
as the Columbia Southern Ex
tension Wirve', and connecting
with their line at Shaniko.
Prom this point on South as
far as Bend they have two sur
veys, tlie Columbia Southern
Extension and the Oregon East
ern, the latter of which starts at
this place.
The presence of the Harriman
surveyors on Trout creek may
mean that the Harriman inter
ests will try to find a way out
of the Deschutes canj'ou up
Tiout creek, if they build their
promised Central Oregon road
up the Deschutes. With the
Oregon Trunk controlling the
Willow creek pass out of the
canyon, that company appears
to have the Harriman people on
the "two horns of a dilemma,"
as far as the Deschutes route is
concerned, for the only alterha
tive the Harriman line would
have would be to come out up
Trout creek, or else build on up
the Deschutes.
