of the Madras Oil & Gas Company near

E. S. F. Newcome, a cattleman from
(lie Shanikd cohntry, was in town Mon
day evening. Mr, Newcome is going to
(lie mountnins to spend n few days with
M. Maxwell at the lattcr's sheep camp
near Soda Springs.

J". Shcrrod started for the mountains last
Saturday, accompanied by their families.
They arc going after berries and will
spend several weeks camped near some of
the big huckleberry patches,
W. F. 1'iclds and wife, Mrs. J. It, Wil
son and John Mays returned Saturday
afternoon from a camping trip in the
mountains. They went over the McKen
zie road. The party killed only one deer,
although they say there is plenty of game
in the mountains if they had cared to hunt
for it.
A. I'. Clark has purchased the large
gasoline engine used by J. C, & M. A,
Kobinson nt their pumping plant and
moved it up on the plains Friday, It has
been mounted on a wogon and will be
used for power in operating Mr. Clark's
threshing machine. This is the fust time
a gasoline engine has been used for that
purpose in this district.
Wesley 1 1 ill has rented the lower rooms
of the townsite building, and his daughter
mid one or two other younn ladies from
Agency Plains will occupy them this Win
ter and take the rjth and loth grade woik
in the Madras school. Houses arc in dc
maud in Madras and nil available build
ings will be occupied by families who dc
sire to reside in Madras to take advantage
of the excellent school at this place. A
number of other buildings could be rented
if they were available.
An old gentleman whose name was not
learned passed through Madras last
Thursday evening on Ids way to the tipper
Deschutes to fish for "red sides." He
stated that he had fished in every other
trout stream in the Unitwl States, and
had come 700 miles to fish in the Des
chutes. He was nn attist, making a spe
cialty of painting members of the finny
tribe, and his fishing trip was not for the
sport of fishing alone, but in order to get
specimens of the Deschutes river trout to
reproduce on canvas.

Reiner's place South of Modras, where

ham Johnson, nn Indian charged with
breaking into the girls' dormitory at the
Indian school at the agency. The Indian
was being taken to Portland to await
trial,
Mr, and Mrs. John Malone and their
two children were in town Monday on
the way to their home at Antelope from a
four weeks' camping trip in the mount
ains, They were camped near Fish Lake,
where n number of people from this sec
tion have been camped during the Sum
mer, Mr. Malone says they had a fine
outing, but a cold rain and some snow
last week started most of the campers
homeward.
