THURSDAY
JULY 30, 1908
HARVEST BEGINS
Harvesting has begun in this
Section, the iirf'r of ih week ill1
headers and binders beginnin
to get busy in Jhe farming dis
tricts adjacent to this place
Threshing will not begin for 10
dnys or two weeks, however
From all reports that come in
from the busy harvesters, it i?
learned that the crops are very
inuch better than was expected
and although the yield will noi
be as heavy as it was last year
tbe grain is of a good quality
and the yield will be above the
nverage. The late and very
unfavorable Spring threatened
a complete crop failure, in this
section, but seasonable rains
and good growing weather later
have brought about a wonder
ful change for the better in the
'crop outlook.
A number of parents in this
vicinity, who have not hereto
fore been patrons of the Madras
fechool, have already signified
their intention of sending their
'children to this school during
the coming year, and quite a
number of these will come to
lake the higher grades. Sev
eral families will build homes
here, and others will rent
houses or board. The Madras
"school should be maintained on
a standard of excellence second
o none in the county, so that
the school may supply good
educational facilities for all this
end of the county. The addi
tion of the 9th and 10th grades
was decidedly a step in the
right direction, and the in
creased attendance this year
will prove the wisdom of it.
The town of Madras will pay
the principal portion of the in
crease m taxes necessary to
inaintain the school, but the
town could have no better ad
vertiseraent than that of offer
ing good school facilities.
The newly created county of
ilood River has iust completed
'a division of property with the
parent .county, Wasco. The-
terms of the division were made
bv a commission appointed bv
the Governor for that purpose,
;and the new county gets its
proportionate share of the prop
erty of the county of Wasco.
Wasco county has had to divide
with a number of its offspring in
'the past, though in a majoiity
of those instances it had noth
ing but debts to divide
Apples, the fruit that made
tlood River famous, promise
the finest crop this season, both
as to quality and quantity, that
Hood River has -ever known.
As the apple season approach
es, estimates of the output run
all the way from 200,000 boxes
to twice that number. The lat
'ter number would require in the
Neighborhood of COO cars fur
"shipiilent.
Following the announcement
that President Roosevelt will
hunt big game in Klamath
'county 'after the expiration of
his term as President, we may
&pect the news that B. fl. Hjw
jriiuan, who owns a shooting
lodge at Pelican Bay in that
'county, offers that property for
fcale very cheap.
