A. C. Sanford left yesterday afternoon
for the Madras Oil Company's camp near
I.ainonU, where they are prospecting for
oil. At last reports thp drill was down
about 7$ feet and the work was progress
ing smoothly.

In Portland. Mrs. I'ercival is -still at the
liospitn, but her condition Is greatly Im
proved and she ts on ihe road to recovery.
The Mies of the Methodist chutch will
serve ice cream, cake, lemonade, popcorn
and candies at the Turner building on the
afternoon and evening ol July 4. Good
music will be furnished. Come and enjoy
a social time with us and bring the child
ren. The committee in change of the big cel
ebration in be held at l'rineville; extends
a special invitation to the residents of this
section to come to l'rineville npd celebrate
with them. The celebration will last three
days July a, 3 and 4, and an attractive

John Lockard is having the lumber for
a barn hauled to Ins lots just South of the
townsite. Later on Mr, Lockhard expects
to have a comfortable cottage built on
these lots,

Wilson, J. W. Hurt and Luther Cowherd
spent yesterday In the Lamonta country,
completing the work of staking out their
oil claims.
Deputy Marshal Terry brought with
him to this city yesterday from l'rineville
two Federal prisoners, Alfred H. Grant
of Hcnd, and Calvin Morris of Paulina,
both of Crook county. Grant was form
erly postmaster at Hend and was indicted
for a shortage of $3000 in his accounts
with the Government, when he was re
moved from office a few months ago,
after an investigation by the postal in
spectors. Morris in charge wilh sending
obscene literature through the mails.

she has been the deservedly popular
teacher of the primary grades in the Mad
ras public school, and she enjoys the
