Mr. and Mrs, Grant -Mayes and Her
bert Bolton of The Dalles and Dr. Ralph
Fisher of Portland, passed through town
last Monday on their return from a trip to

by him. They made the dip out from
Shauiko to' )kiinevillc in four and a half
hours.
A deal was closed Tuesday- by which
the Ml. JciTctson lodge of Odd Fellows
acqipied (he Smith building on Main
street, (he consideialion being 5700. The
upper room of the building is occupied by
the lodge as a lodge room, and the lowet
tloor will be tented by them, The build
iug was a bargain at the price at which
they bought it.
C. W. Allen, a farmer from the un
gated section near Luidlaw, was in town
Tuesday. He says that Attorney Gener.il

Dan McD.kIc, a Nebraska farmer, has
purchased the 1. 'inch of F. L, Lyons west
of. Ilaycrcek, and, with his fatpily took
possession last week, lie purchased the
livestock and implements with the place.
Mi. Lyons has gone to I'onland foi a
vitit and later will probably locate in the
valley. Mr. McDadc was in town Tues
day, accompanied by his wife, buying
supplies. Mr. McDadc has also filed a
homestead entry upon a quarter section
adjoining the land he purchased.
J. W. Collins, who was one of the orig
inal promoters of the traction freighting
pioject between this place and Sbamko,
was in town Wednesday on his way in
from The Dalles in a large automobile,
He expects to operate the automobile be
iwecn l'rincville and Shaniko via .NJadras
for passenger set vice, and if he finds that
the business will justify It will make tegu
lar trips between these points, His ma
chine will carry five pacngers comforta
bly, and the trip between this place and
Shaniko should not require more than
four hours
Clark Rude, auditor and George Slim
mers, lineman, ol the 1'ioncer Telephone
Company, were in Madras Tuesday even
ing looking after telephone matters at this
place. While here Mr. Rude stated that
the Pioneer Telephone Co would probably
extend its line from this place to connect
with the line acioss the Warmspring res
ervation at once, and Wednesday he and
Mr. Summers spent the day going ovei
the piopo.rd line. This connection would
greatly improve Hie long-distance tele
phone seivicc at this place, a's it would (
give us direct connection with The Dalles.
At picscnt the long-distance service via
I'lineville is very inelllcicnt, patrons also
being compelled to pay the added .cost of
ihe message to I'lineville nnd from there
"to the long distance point. J
