SUPPORT THg UNIVERSITY
Judging by the editorial com
ment of the state pi ess, there is
no danger that the appropria
tion of $125,000 for tho support
of the Universitj' of Oregon will
be defeated in the coming elec
tion, when that question will be
submitted to the voters of the
state by a referendum petition.
It is to hoped, however, that the
vote for the appropriation will
be so decisive that the referen
dum will never again be in
voked upon a measure for the
support of an educational insti
union in this state. Oregon is
a growing state, and her educa
tional institutions should be
supported in a' manner which
will permit them to keep apace
with the progress of the state.
The amount appropriated by
the last legislature, $125,000, is
little enough for- the support oi
our chief educational institu
tion, Washington and Idaho
are each more liberal with their
state universities, and as a con
sequence they are in .a prosper
ous condition and take their
places in the front rank of the
institutions of the Northwest.
Washington last 3'ear appro
priated in the neighborhood of
a half million dollars for build
ings which the state university
is to have after they have been
used for the Seattle exposition,
and the fact that the university
was to get the benefit was one
of the strongest inducements in
securing that appropriation.
Liberality has characterized the
treatment of the state univer
sity by the Washington legis
lature, and the wisdom of the
policy is evidenced by the fact
that the University of Wash
ington has 1200 students, while
Oregon has only a third of that
number, because the university
has been handicapped by lack
of state support. That any one
should begrudge our state uni
versity a fair and reasonable
measure of support is incom
prehensible, and we believe that
the intelligent and progressive
voters of the state are in a large
majority, and will vote solidly
for the university appropriation.

MONEY IN POTATO CROP
Umatilla county boasts the
largest potato iield in Eastern
Oregon, or in the state for that
matter. One linn has 135 acres
in potatoes on land under the
Furnish-Coe irrigation ditch.
Last year this firm had SO acres
of potatoes on new, raw laud,
and the venture was so success
ful that the acreage was nearly
doubled this year.
When Central Oregon gets
rail transportation the potato
orop will be one of tho most im
portant prodiiots of this section,
for this section appears to bo
especially well suited for po
itttto oulture. Not only is the i
