J. It. Lovcall, formerly engaged in the j
drug business at Shaniko, was in town the
first of the week. Mr. Lovcall is now
traveling for a hardware firm, and was
just reluming from an extended trip
through Central Oregon.
R. Howard, mfinai.'cr, and CM Red
field, chief engineer, of the Deschutes Ir
rigation iffc Power Company, were in Mad
ras last Saturday evening on their way to
Poitlaud. Mr. Howard has recently taken
change of the ii ligation work at Bend,
having succeeded , Mr. F. S, Stanley as
manager.
S. D. P ercival has bought three lots in
the First Addition to Madras and expects
to build a collage 011 them some time this
summer He is clearing the ground now
and getting ready to build, as lie expects
to have his house under way by the first
of August. Mrs. Percivat is still at the
ranch, but they expect 10 make final proof
on their homestead by June.
James Maguess and I. b Shutt were
thc spcccsslul bidders for the construction
of the new school house in the Mud
Springs school district, and were awarded
the contract l.tsl Saturday. There were
several bidders for thc work, the contract
being awarded to the lowest of these. The
new school building will be a comfortable
one, and large enough to meet thc grow
iug demands of that populous district.
Work will be stalled at once in order that
the building may be ready for occupancy
when the Fall term of school begins.
Frank Lovcland returned yesterday
morning from a week's trip in Eastern
Oregon, where he went on business in
connection with the oil prospecting com
pany organized at this place. Mr. Love
land visited sections of' Eastern Oregon
in which oil has been found, with a view
to comparing the formation and topogra
phy of those sections with the tcr.itory in
vlii ;h the wells arc to be sunk in tins
vicinity. He also engaged an expert oil
well man, who will be in Madras within a
week, to make air.ingements for begin
ning the work in this locality. The ex
pel whom they have secuicd for the woik
here has had experience in thc Pennsyl
vania oil fields, and is reputed to be an
expert in this line of work. Work on the
wells will be begun just as soon as thc
machinery arrives liere, which will proba
lily be within a 111 mill or six weeks.

Sheriff Elkins reports taxes coming in
quite promptly this year. Uj to date he

One result of thc financial flurry last
fall is (he increase in half payments made
by non-resident people. This inc. case is

Wheat sales in the Madras country has
loosened money over that way, and taxes
from that pa.t of Crook arc coming in
freely.
Willjam Hpcgli of the Cove orchard,
was in town Tuesday. He reports that
thc frost has touched up some of the ear
lier and more lender fruits, just how
much damage has been done cannot at
this time bp found out. He is busy spray
ing and getting his f.uit trees ready for
the coining season,
C. It. Roush, manager ol the Madras
Trading Company, was in the city today.
He expected to make the round trip to
day, on horseback.
H. A. Foster and Harry Lanius re
lumed Tuesday evening frpui a visit in
the Madras country.
