THUHSDAY - April 16, 1908
TOM&rlROW WILL DECIDE
At the primary nominating
Elections to be held tomorrow
ihe contests over the nomina
lions for the various county
offices will b'e decided. One of
the most important of these
contests is that for the republi
can nomination' for county
tjudge, for the nomination in
that case will be praoticillly
'equivalent to election to that
Jmportant office. The Jioueer
has supported Mr. H. C. Ellis of
.feend for the nomination be
cause of the absolute conviction
lliat he is entitled to the sup
port of this section. In the iirst
place, Mr. Ellis did not become
a candidate until he had reason
to believe that there would be
no candidate from this sec
tion, and that his candidacy
would be entirely acceptable:
That was the situation when
a certain coterie of Prineville
politicians ana business men
attempted to force Mr. Ellis to
make a number of ante-election
pledges, one of which was that
he would oppose county divis
ion during the four years term
"of his office. His refusal to
wear the "Prineville Collar" was
,. the beginning'of the 011I3' oppo
sition there is to his candidacy.
As a matter of fact, the coun
'ty judge has 110 greater voice
than thai of any other .citizen of
t,the county on the question of
"county division, but the pnr-t-pose
of the effort was to pledge
Mr. Ellis to help fight Prine
Ville's battles. It is a shameful
fact, well known throughout the
county, that in 1905 wlien Piine
ville sent a delegation to Salem
' to fight count j' division, that
'delegation's expenses were paid
out of the county funds, by or -
der of the county court. That
' they should now attempt to
force a candidate Jjor county
' -judge to pledge himself to stand
y'j with Prineville on the county
division question, is in keeping
with their high-handed use of
the people's moiie' to fight
their battles with. And, the
Pioneer believes that Mr. Ellis,
by his manly refusal to buy
their support by pledging him
'self to their policies, has earned
'tlie support of this section,
'Which wants only fair treatment
in county affairs no more, no
less.
These are the chief ' reasons
which have prompted our sup
'jxptt of Mr. Ellis, but there is
also the furt.her reason of his
'especial fitness for the place.
-He is a business man of line
ability, and has the legal train
ing necessary to qualify him for
the office, and he will undoubt
edly make Crook county an ex
cellent judge.
. Mr. Blanchard. who is Mr.
. Ellis' opponent in the race, has
many friends in this section of
the county. He would have re
ceived practically the solid sup
' port of Kutcher and adjoining
precincts for school superinten
dent, to which office he first as
pired, Ilia experience in the
schoolroom especially qualified
him for that office? and it is gen
eially conceded that he. could
have had it. An1, Mr. Blanch
hid cannot deny tha( he would
still have been a candidate for
that office had his Prineville
J'riendH not put the idea into his
tend of coming out for tlio
.
COlUlty Judgeship. And those
same Prineville friends wore the
men who stood Mr. Ellis up and
demanded ante-election pledgee
of him. The Pioneer has no
light against Mr. Blnnchard
personally, bub we do insis
that the Voters of this section
CO
should vote for II. 0. Ellis for
county judge, unless they wan
to play into the hands of the
Prineville clique, who turne
LMr. Ellis tiown becatlse he
would not do their bidding, aild
tlfen brought out Blanchard as
their candidate, to beat Ellis by
splitting the West side vote.
FAIR TREATMENT TO ALL
Last week's Bend Bulletin
says: "At ti little gathering of
Bend men in the early part of
tho campaign, Mr. Ellis reiter
ated his purpose to treat all sec
tious of the bounty with equal
fairness, when he stated to those
present, lI would just as soon
have, it understood now as at
any time that if 1 aih nominat
ed and elected the interests of
Prineville will have to receive
fair consideration the same as
all other sections of tile county.'
Those present apphUlded him
when he made that alateiiient
because it was an utterAnce of
the principle for which they
were contending, just and eual
treatment for all the county.
But the Prineville crowd was
not satisfied with this sort of a
candidate. They at once set to
worJ to defeat Mr. Ellis, and
their first move was to induce
Mr. Blanchard to go after the
count' judgeship. Blanchard
was a West side hian, having a
homestead in the Madras sec
tion. He was popular and was
making a very favorable run for
superintendent
nt Of 'schools. They
J
pllt the Weht Side
desired to s
vote, and figured that Blanchard
was as strong a man as they
could put up. The importance
of spitting the" "West side vote is
seen when one considers that at
the last election the western and

robliing the rest of the'eounty,
this North and West side vote
J must be split. And they trust-
ed in Blanchard to split it.
Mr. Ellis will receive practi
cally the unanimous vote of this
section. .The voters have known
from the beginning what is the
moving spirit behind the
Blanchard candidacy, and they
will not play directly into the
hands of the Prineville ring by
voting for Blanchard. On the
contrary, Mr. Ellis promises to
treat all sections with equal
fairness, he lias a legal educa
tion that aptly lits him for the
position, and possesses the abil
ity necessary to conduct the
business of the county in a bus-ness-like
manner. He will poll
one of the largest votes ever'
cast in Crook county, and his
nomination and election is us-'
6ured."'
