A MATTER OF STATE PRIDE
The act increasing the state
hpproprintion for the University
of Oregon to $f2fi,000 per annum
jvhich act was held up by the
referendum aud will be sub
mitted to the voters of the state
1
jiext June, should be supported
by everj citizen of Oregon, who
feels a pride in his state. That
the referendum should have
been invoked on a measure for
the support of the chief educa
tional institution of the state is
cause enough for shame, and
the majority for the appropria
tion when the question conies
to a vote in June, should be so
overwhelming as to prove an
unmistakable rebuke to those
who held the measure upj and'
at the same time forever dis
courage the calling of a refer
endum vote on an appropria
tion for the advancement of our
educational interests.
1 Oregonians should ieel a
pride in having their state uni
versity as good as aii3T in the
Northwest, and the old appro
priation of 47,500 was wholly
inadequate, to maintain it. The
appropriation of $125,000 which
jWas provided by the act was
Ziot as generous a support as Ida
ho and Washington gave their
State universities lat ear, but
it would have made possible
inany needed improvements,
hnd was a step in the right
direction. The people of the
state should show their approv
al by voting for the appropria
tion, and against tlfe mossback-
sm which begrudges the money
spent for education.
