SO ADVKIITISUTQ UATKS ON APPLICATION Kntercd ns second clas3 matter August 29. 1901, ftt tlio Postoflico nt Madras. Ore., under tho Act of Congress of March 3,lbtV, .THURSDAY Oct. 24, 1907 1 AN INVASION THREATENED Foe a dozen years back Cen tral Oregon lias been loqkiug for a railroad, bope being kept alive. by repeated promises pf the extension o the Corvallis & .Eastern, or the construction of a Harriinan line into this sec- tion. These promises have invariably failed of fulfillment, and the recent utterances of -Mr. Harrinian, atjer his trip. through Central Oregon., and following upon his purchase of the Oorvallis & Eastern, which headed off the possibility of an extension of that road, show conclusive!' that the Harriman interests never "did intend building into Central Oregon until forced to do so bjT the .threatened invasion of this ter ritory by other interests. That fact is established, and the pos sibility of a Harriman line into Central Oregon may be reck oned in exact proportion to the danger there is of other inter ests finding a way into this country through the Harriman blockade. With this understanding of the railroad situation in Cen tral Oregon, the prospects of 'railroad construction into this long neglected section look brighter at this time than ever before, by reason of the very imminent danger of an invasion of the territory from two new sources. The Oregon Trunk Line, an independent project, has secured right of way for its line up the Deschutes as far as Madras in spite of opposition which has delayed the con struction of that line for more than a year, and almost at the same time there is news of the activity of the Mt. Hood elec tric road which indicates that that project is also pushing its way into the Harriman pre serves. Central Oregon is going to - have a railroad soon, and prob-1 ably two, for no one has ever doubted that Harriman would build whenever the danger of an invasion of his preserves be came imminent, and that time has arrived. The Mt. Hood road is backed by ample capi tal, and while no anuounce- menls are being made, the activity of that company in acquiring power sites along the Deechutes is a much more -definite announcement than '"anything thn officials of the company could sa'. The Ore gon Trunk Line, too, with its possibilities of a Hill connec tion, is a project that threatens, and although its promoters f have confessed to some trouble in financing it, their perfected right of way is a valuable asset, ' and the practicability of the 1 route and its advantageous con nections at the Columbia River should make it an easy project financed as soou as the money market becomes more settled.
