Crews of surveyors havo boon ent into tho field from sovcnil directions A crew equipped for two month's Held work was started into tho hills from Petroit toward Hogg Pass several weeks ago. Another crow took direc tion southeast from that jo'mt and will look for easier grades over tho summit. A third crew was sent via Shauiko into the Princville country and today started from tlmt point toward Sistors, in the foothills of the oast slopes of tho Cas cades. It is now apparent that a thor ough reconnoisanco is to be made of the country from Detroit to I'rinevillo and probably further east. When the high ollicials of the system returned from the Madras trip it was reported from tin undeniably good au thority that they had practically decid ed to favor the extension of the Corvallis k Eastern to Madras and Princville. There has been no olllcial statement on tho subject, but it has for some time been known that Mr. llarri man was in the humor to build into central Oregon aud probably through the state to Ontario should the strin gent lulxjr conditions and other dinlcul ties 1h- somewhat modified for the better this Fall. At the prcsont time, it is said, there is so great a scarcity of labor, and the diflKulties and delays in getting con struction material delivered are so dis couraging, that the railroad builders are going slow in the inauguration of any new construction project. These conditions favor the extension of tho C. & K.as against the immediate building of the Oregon Kastern, for it would be easier to get men to deliver materials and supplies fur this work than for any other one bf the central Oregon routes under consideration. Con- tructiOn catnis could he supplied from the Shaniko terminus of the Columbia otithorn and tho Idanha end of the t'orvallir" &. Kastern ltosidents of Central Oregon say they must hare a railroad by tho time the cropping teason arrives for grain next year, in order to determine tho question of crops to be put in. The C. A F.. route would givo Crook county a rail road quicker than any other eurvuy made. In the meantime, many interented i)oi sous are watching the progress of the Nelson syndicate that is promoting u railroad up the Desclnitoi Hirer, ad mitted to be the best route, for a rail road grade into Central Ortogon.
