THURSDAY May 23, 1907 HY NOT A UNION DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL? 11 ill 8 umiiial school meeting to be held in this district 011 "June 17, the question of estab lishing a district high school under the provisions of the law passed by the last legislature, will be submitted to the voters of the district, and will unques tionably be decided afiirma- tively, as it should be, in order . that bettei school facilities ma' be provided here. Under the provisions of that Jaw, separate districts ma' vote upon and establish a district high school if they so desire, 01 if 'several adjoining districts desire to combine in the organ ization of a union district high school, that may be done. And this latter plan seems the most fea&ible and practical one 10 adopt in comparatively small districts such as the Madras "district and those which imme diately adjoin it. The-patrons of the Madias school desire in .this district some provision for higher courses lor the pupils who have completed the grammar grades of the public school. With 'this object in view they are going to vote upon the organiz ation of the district high school. At the same time, howevaiy $1 per bushel for their wheat, is about to be realized. Providence, the Asiatic fam ine and the wheat pit aro com bining to boost the prospective pi ice of Umatilla wheat. The wheat growing area of U.e world is not keeping pace with the increase of the w heat eating population. It stands to reason that wheat prices are to be bet ter instead of worse. It stands to reason that as population in creases that the price of the commodity will naturally ad vance.. If Umatilla count' farmers could get 75 cents all through, for one year's crop, it would bn especially gratifying. ' Many times in the past it has seemed that this price would be reached, but something always happensjust before the dream is realized. Eat Uregonian. Wheat in the Palnuse coun try is selling for 07 cents, and is now practically all out of the hands of the farmer. Crop conoitions are favorable there, and the indications are that next season's crop will bring big prices, as warehousemen and millers there are trying to contract grain for alter harvest delivery, at CO cents "per bushel, with no takers. With big cror)S and big prices, the indi cations are that the farmers in that country will make some mo nev this vear. nection is made with the Col umbia Soul hern. A now method of destroying squirrels has been 'discovered by Homer Hull of Colfax. Mr. Hull's moihod Is to tine a rag or piece of cotton, saturated with a prepauition which he has invented, to put in the holes where the squirrels are. The hole is then iilled up at the top and the fumes soon kill the squirrels. In a number of tests the squirrels were found to be dead in from three to eight minutes after the hole was Iilled. Several public tests have been made and the experi ment proved successful. COW FOR SALE Fresh milch cow for nle.
