The Madras Pioneer John Scott, who formerly owned the Tygh Valley flour ing mill, and under wljose man agement the product of that mill acquired an enviable reputation throughout this section of the state, was in town the latter part of last weejk. It is understood that Mr. Scott was looking for a new location, anlthathe was here to look over this held and the Madras flouring mill with thai object in view. The Madras mill is not for sale, however,, as the pres ent owners desire to hold on to it, and so Mr. Scott did not invest here. He has sold out his Tygh Valley mill, and is at present located at Scott's Mill, operating the flouring mill which his father established 34 years ago. A. C. Sanford has received a new windmill and pump, which will be installed at the well on his building lots on the flat, lie has planted a number of trees and vines and is improving these lots with the intention of building a home there later on. The windmill will pump enough water for irrigating all of the plants, and when Mr. Sanford is ready to build, lie will nave one of the most attractive residence plats in Madras. Others would do well to emulate his example. The town of Kent in Sher man county was partially destroyed by lire last week more than half of the business houses of the town being burned. Thirty citizens of Wasco, a Sherman county town, sub scribed $50 each to secure the services of Charles M. Hatfield, the California "-rain maker", who agrees to make six inches of rain between May 25 and July 25 of this year. The money subscribed is payable if Hatfield secures the rainfall as per agreement during that period. The average rainfall in that section during that period is less than inch, and for the entire jrear there is some thing like ten to twelve inches. The fifteen hundred dollars to be paid to the "rain maker" will be returned an hundred fold, sh6uld he secure the promised rainfall.
