McManus. editor of .the Pilot )iock Kecord, and one ,of the well-known newspaper men of Eastern Oregon is on -trial in Umatilla county for .killing Bob Estes, whom he shot last February. McManus, .who had been on a protracted ppree, shot Estes in a bar-ioom iljb was thought at the time, that e shot Estes through mistake, ,1)111 develppments at the trial 'indicate that the defense will be justifiable killing. At the time of the killing it was reported Uhat McManus claimed he had Jbeen robbed by Estes, who was a professional gambler. . But for his unfortunate habit of excessive drink, McManus .would be one of the foremost editors in Eastern Oregon lNaturaiiy orient, ne lias uaa a .number of opportunities, onlj (to fail, because, of his unfortu nate .'weakness. A few years ago he established a , Wcol .Grower's Journal at Pendleton, ,devoted to the interests of ;sheep mem throughout the state, but this enterprise was Miot a success, although the 'journal deserved support and was well gotten up. Among j the interesting articles in that 'journal in some of its firstissues was an article on the Baldwin ,Sheep & Land Company of Hay creek. . The trial of Binger Hermann at Washington City, on the "letter copybook cases", which has been in progVess for more than eleven weeks, has been completed and is probably in the hands of the jury, as it was expected that the argument of counsel would be finished today. Citizens of Oregon, who have been treated to a valuable and enlightening insight into the hidden character of their public officials through the me dium of the land fraud investi gations in this state, have fur ther cause to be proud of their political acumen in the selection of their public servants, in the exposures brought, out in the Hermann case. As woof of the theory that "public office is a private graft", the Hermann case adds new testimony to the evidence already adduced in this state. These free delivery routes are only established in those districts which can comply with certain requirements as to pop ulation and post office patron age within a prescribed dis tance. Madras is already Jhe central noint for several of such districts.
