AGREE TO GO-OPERATE Llttlo Plain Settlers Pledge Support And Funds WILL ASSIST IN EFFORT FOR STATE AID Plan To Got Appropriation Moots with Their Heart 5 Approval Mooting Held Last Saturday Night A number of the ranchers of the Little Plain met at I he home of J. C;Sothmnn last Saturday dvening for the purpose of dis cussing the movement started on Agency Plains to secure state aid in tho solution of the water problem in this section. Mr. J. C. Sothman was elected chairman of the meeting; and Conrad Schrieber was secretary. Tho proposal of the rilnrjhers on the big plains was fully dis cussed, and resolutions were passed endorsing the action taken at their meetihft; and pledging the support- df the Little Plain ranchers to the movement. Funds were also pledged for bearing their pro portion of tho expense incurred. The movement started 'on the big plains has as its object the securing of state aid in sinking two or more deep wells for the ptirposo of ascertaining the practicability of deep well drilling ih this large section of couiitry. Several private enter prises ol' tlio kind have been started, but owing to the heavy expense of drilling to any great depth, the attempts have been abandoned before water was secured. The expense of drill ing to a depth of, say, 000 feet, is so great that no rancher in this district can afford it, unless it has been demonstrated that water can b obtained. With that fact once demonstrated, a number of wells would imme diately be drilled, becnuse the rancher could afford to mort gage his ranch if necessary, on the reasonable certainty of the great improvement that would result to his place. With water upon the ranches of this section, values would increase so rapidly that the expenditure would borepai'd in a few years, in increased amount of taxes from this Bebtion. Taking thin view of it, it is proposed to ask th"6 Btate legislature to make ah appropriation of sufficient sifce to cover the expense of sinking tlioso experimental wells'. Culver and Lamonta, seven miles apart, have the banner mail connection of the entire service to the Deschutes River district, where each office boasts of tho superlativenoss of its poor srrvice. Tho shortest mail schedule time from Culver to Lamonta and return, seven miles each way, is just six days and this splendid time is only possible whpn the mails con nect as scheduled. A letter from Culver addressed to La monta must first go to Shaniko, then back to Grizzly, then out to Lamonta; the reply from Lamonta reaches Griizly in time.to miss the stage; leaves next day for Shaniko in time to miss the stage again, and on the evening of the third day from Lamonta reaches Culver, having traveled over 200 miles in the round trip. Ora A. Rhodes left Idot Tuesday for Hood River, where be will visit friends for several weeks. Relinquishment for sale at less than half cost of Improvements, for a lim ited period.
