If other sections of the Des chutes district suiter as many annoyances in the matter of their mail service as do the patrons of this office, it is not surprising that there has been general demand throughout this district for an improve ment iu the service from the railroad. At this office it quite frequently happens that either jthe lock sack or the paper mail fails to put in an appearance, and sometimes neither comes -r 1 On Monday the day before Christmas, when we should nave Had two days' mail as 1 ' there is no Sunday service for this office, one lone sack ar rived, th,e balance of the mail having, been left at Shaniko. ,,The reason assigned here was jthat the Prineville stage was so lieavily loaded with Christmas toail for Prineville and points beyond, Hiat the stage could not brine: the Madras mail. ,Next morning Christmas day, .there was three days' mail to be distributed at this office. Aside from. the inconvenience caused .by the delay in the letter mail, .the delay in the receipt of the daily newspapers is no small ,anri.oyance to those who care to .know what is going on in the outside world. On Tuesday, December 25, we received the' Portland dailies of the 22nd. j .Again on last Friday there was lOnly paper mail, ttre lock sack haying failedjo put in an ap pearance. This week it will be something else, and the 011I3' .remedy is the establishment of a diiect daily mail from the railrod to the Deschutes dis trict, for which this section has petioned and to which it is so 'justly entitled. THE WAY OF THE SENATE ; It seems likely that Senator .Pulton will be able to defeat the 'confirmation of William C. Bristol, appointed United States District Attorney for Oregon by President Roosevelt, not be cause of any unfitness for the important office to which he has been appointed, but because of the influence a Senator can , bring to bear among his fellow .members, to defeat an appoint , nient not sanctioned by him. Fit ness isn't the test; the question is Does your Senator endorse you? Mr. Bristol was named for the , federal attorneyship in this state, made vacant by the re moval of John II. Hall, because of his peculiar fitness for the , office, boih by reason of his ability as a lawyer and because ,of his freedom from embar-1 rassing political affiliations at a . time when the dominant politi , cal faction of the state had corrupted a majority of its public servants. Tho appoint ment was made without con sulting Senator Pulton, who up to this time has succeeded in . preventing confirmation by the , Senate. It is probable that by .invoking the "shoulder-to-. bhoulder" policy that prevails in the senate chamber he will be I able to curry out his intention . to defeat the appointment, in Hpite of the fact that Oregon weeds at this time a federal (lis t trim attorney free from 'politi cal taint".
