Community Wells is New Plan
To Solve tho Water Problem
AGENCY PLAINS FARMERS WILL DRILL
W. F. Moglll'a Ranch Solectod as Site
For First Woll pxpense ofWork
To Be Shared Severally .
The residents of Agency
Plains are determined to solve
the water problem, which is the
most difficult one which con
fronts them, and with this object
in view have decided to com
bine forces and drill commun
ity wells at different points on
the plains. At a meeting of a
number of ranchers on the
plairiB, last Thursday evening,
it was decided to make the first
attempt for water on the ranch
ofW.F. Magill, whose home
stead lies on the township line
between 9 and 10 in range 13.
Eight or 10 of M.r. MagiU's
neighbors will combine forces
with him, and together they
will have a deep well drilled,
arrangement being made to go
to a depth of five or six hundred
feet if necessary. The well
will be jointly owned by those
who join in the enterprise, the
expense to be prorated among
them.
The large new drill owned by
J. Strain will be employed, and
the work will commence at once
and be prosecuted vigorously
nntil water is secured. Mr.
Strain has secured the services
of a competent driller from
Sherman county, and his drill
has a capacity of 1000 feet in
depth, although it is not be
lieved that it will be necessary
to drill to that depth befoie
securing plenty of water. The
well on xir. Strain's place,
which has already been drilled
to a depth of something over a
hundred feet, will be abandoned
until this community well is
completed. Should the effort to
secure water prove successful,
other well companies will be
organized, and other wells will
be drilled.
The lack of a supply of good
water for ranch and household
purposes is the greatest handi
cap with which the fanners of
the plains have to contend. It
requires the services of a man
and team a good portion of the
lime to haul water from Madias
and other points, sometimes for
a distance of ten or twelve
miles. Even with a low esti
mate of the cost and expense of
this method of supplying their
ranches with water, enough will
be saved in a short time by the
drilled well, if water can be
secured, to more than reim
burse the ranohers for the cost
of it. And, in addition, their
ranohes will be doubled in val
ue if they can secure a good
supply of pure water.
