Ore., punier the Act or congress i juni m,-, ------ i. ii IwTU THURSDAY December t3, 1906 CHANGE iti THE MAIL SERVICE RECOMMENDED. It is currently reported that a change in the mail route has been recommended by Superin tendent Vaille, but that th proposed change does not ac cord fully with the require ments in Western Crook, as expressed in the monster peti tion recently forwarded to the postmaster general. The pro posed change, according to the report which is going the rounds, provides for a route around Grizzly Mountain to O'Neils, and a Y there, one line going on to Prineville and the other to Bend, with a spur to Lamonta, the Madras office to be served through Haycreek. This proposed change does tint overcome many of the objec tions which were urged against the old mail route, and for that reason will be unsatisfactory to those who have petitioned for the change in the mail service. The recommendation, if it is true that one has been made, was made before the petition was forwarded to the postal department, and the fact that a change is recommended 1)3' the superintendent ofthe service may prove of great assistance in securing the changes outlined in the petition, as a very strong showing is made by the peit tioners. Half-measures will not prove satisfactory to the populou west side of the county, whose growing population and large business interests demand a much better service than th present, and any change which does not meet the requirements of the case, will leave the ques tion open for further agitation and continued objection. A dail', direct, mail service, serv ing the populous districts along ,the Deschutes and in Western Crook is required, and the de partment certainly will not ol der changes now which will only prove a temporary make shift, and which will requin4 further changes in the service in the near luture. UP TO THE FARMER. The exceptional dryness of the Fall weather in this spction this season makes a strong ar gument, in favor of a trial of the "Campbell system" of fanning, and the Pi neer cannot relrain from again urging upon the farmers of this locality thy idea of making a careful si tidy ol this method and giving it a fair trial. Fall sown grain has not come up yet and the soil i. ,t,oo diy for plowing. By Campbell's "summer culture" plan the moisture of last Win ter's storiiu and the soaking .jains of last Spiing and earl Summer could have been con served in the fields so as to 3iave been available for a per feet growth of grain sowed during the lirst weeks in Sep tember, and the grain by thi& time would be several inches in lieight. Mr. Campbell's fore- .man on the Model Farm at Hill City, Koim-is 'if, Ihe t'losH ()r . ansas, .it uit ciose 01 ,last harvest reported that in case jiobadrop of rain should fall in the next twelve months that ,lxe could produce a good crop "by drawing on the moisture already stored in thesoil. With Eticha condition as this prevail &Dg in the Madras section ASA prospects would he different fmm the present. iV Camp bell wvstem has ceased to bo au experiment ThefrJ la no patent or( copvright ; oh this method of farming. It seems to be the last hope for 11 sum crop in a semi-arid region like this, but that hope is a bright onek renditions here are almost idniical with those where the Cntupbeil jilan proves to be the jjieatest sticcess. We haw iippiox inatelv the sathe amount oi uiinfnll, the sauie climaiit conditions and the same kind M soil. That the application of the same methods would bring the same results, no reasonable person can doubt. The matter seems to be up to the fanner.
