last Thursday evening, on their way nui

Ok ing to the illness of Mrs, Mass, thr
protracted meeting at Madras to be con
ducted by H. W. Bass, announced to
begin Monday, October, 29, is postponed
until November 26,
Dwight Roberts, of Culver, has re
ceived the appointment as mail carrier on
the Culver Rural Free Delivery route,
having scored the best grades at. the re
cent competitive exauiin.ttiun held at this
place.
George Stevens and family returned
last Monday evening from Prinevillc.
Since their return Mrs. Stcevns has been
quite ill, and il is feared that she has
typhoid. Her mother has been summon
cd from Sisters, and will arrive this after
noon. W. D. McGec was in town from The
Dalles several days during the week,
Mr. McGce is becoming interested in dry
land farming, which he believes will be
the salvation of this countiy. He expect
to 'J Campbell" all of the ground whidi he
seeds on his ranch near this place, during
the coming year.
Perry Read, of Culver, was in .town
yesterday. He has just concluded a six
weeks' ride after his cattle, and out of 175
head turned out, he only succeeded in
gatl'ering up nbout 135 head. Mr.
Read says that the ride just concluded
was nbout the most tiresome he ever
undertook, and that if he can succeed in
gathering up those he has out, he will
not joun have any more on the range in
this locality.
W. O. Daagasen, manager of the Great
Western Lumber Co., of Ashwood, was
In town several days during the week, in
the interests of his sawmill. He says
that he thinks he is entitled to a fair share
of the lumber business in this locality, as
his mill company has on hand large quan
tities of fine dry and seasoned lumber,
and the distance to the miil from Madras
is only about 2t miles. His ad appears
in this issue.
The condition of Leslie Ramsey, who
has been critically ill at his father's home
on Agency Plains, is reported to be very
much improved, and strong hopes of his
recovery are now entertained. The last
days ot the week his condition was so
serious that his life was despaitcd of, and
while hii condition is still critical, re
ports from his bedside during tlje past
two days indicate a decided improve
ment, and have been quite cheering to
his friends.
