the Astoria Columbia River
Railroad from Sriisi'de to Jilla"
mook aa announced by Presi
dent Hammond and printed in
tlio Oregonian yesterday, will
undoubtedly be commenced
early next season. It is under
stood that the ground ia now
being looked over, and that
during hia present visit to Port
land President, Hamniohd is
making plana for actual con
struction. It seems hkely that
iho Hammond intei-ests will
beatllarriman in entering Cen
tral Oregon.
Guy W. Talbot, geheral man
ager of the Hammond lines, re
turned recently from Idanha,
the eijstein terminus of the Cor
vallia '& Eastern, where he rode
oh horseback across the Cas
cades and into Central Oregon
along the rouie the extension
will follow. ta report on the
practicability of the extension
was made personally to Presi
dent Hammond on his present
visit to Portland.
That President Hammond
may make this same trip to de
termine for himself .the feasi
bility of the surveys already
made seems likely. Together
with Mr. Talbot, he will go
over the Cqrvallis & Eastern
late this week, leaving Portland,
tomorrow in a private car ou a
lour of inspection that will in
clude the Astoria & Columbia
River Railroad.
Hammond activity in Central
Oregon ia expected to hasten
rhe building of the. Oregon

This grade will be encountered
from Natron to the summit of

will be crossed at an altitude of
Btj'd'd feet at a point near Cres
cent Lake. The line will then
run southeasterly out upon thy

south of Walkers Range.
If the Harriman system
would sate-guard the advan
tageous position it now holds
in this state, the Central Oregon
country lniist be tapped by
these connecting lines with thn
Southern Pacific. The advenr,.
of other powerful interest
makes it inoperative that thesn .
lines be. built and activity on
the pjojjects already mapped
out will probably be noticed
soon.
The construction of the Ore

announcement of thet appropria

of the first 152 miles wjas made
by General Manager O'Brien, of .
the Harriman lines-., in the
Northwest, the local offices havo .
nothing definite regarding fur
ther plans in building the ioad. ,
Like the letting of the conttacts
for the Coos Bay extension',
news from SaJn.lPranci8CO in rer
gard to the Oregon Eastern is
expected at any time.
The survey for the Madras.- .
Klamath Falls feeder of the
Oregon Eastern started at this. .
place last Fall, Under charge of
J. Q. Graham, whose party has .
J just about completed the survey
to Klamath Falls. The C. & E.
survey, made many years ago,' '
is said to follow an easy pass ;
over the mountains, and crosses'
the Deschutes at Pickett's. Islands-,
the location of the town
of taidlaw. While these two
railroads are issuitig state
ments as to their purpose of
building "next year", the Ore

of the Deschutes to Madras, i
