Last fall a fanner in the Mad ras country j)lanted bis grain with a presser drill. A presser drill operates iu such a manner that the seed is deposited in the ground, and a follower moving immediately behind the drill presses the soft earth tight over the seed and leaves a trench .about two inches wide and three inches deep, in the bottom on which the tender grain sprouls first appear in their growth. When the snow fell these Irenches were filled with it, and the sweeping winds did not "blow the snow out of the trenches. "When the cold snap came last March, the tender sprouts were snug and warm beneath their white blankets nnd were safe from the biting frosts and poison winds, which "blighted thousands of acres of young grain on all sides. When the frosts were gone this grain sprang up and looked out of the trenches and grew, and now drinks in the rain drops, and waves eight and ten inches! high, with promise. of an abuu dant harvest, while in the fields that were frozen out and had to "be reseeded the grain scarcely covers the clods as yet. Perhaps this is giving too much credit to the trenches, but it is not presuming too much to think that their presence was a great advantage. Jf the trenches saved the grain or even helped to save it, they were worth while. They were Oil tie nnd only a by-pio-duct of the seed drill, but they were the agents of a great econ omy. It will be found to be the lit tle facts thRt will mean much in the farming of this which requires methods pecul iar to itself. It will be the nicety of adaptation of method, variet' of seed and time of planting that will develop the highest possibilities of our soil's production, and it will be the iittle bits of wisdom that will point the successful way. And every grain of wisdom that can be gained along these lines is worth while. The little things are worth while. The consideration ol them iriarks the line between the products of genius and mediocrity, between success and ! failure. It is worth while to think. List your faims with D.
