At tlu rnstoltlci at Aimirns. uro. under tho Act of CotiRiess of Jiarch 8,18i9, THURSDAY April 26, 1906 THE STr1ICKEN.6lTY, The disaster which, befell the city of San Francisco on the morninrr of Wednesd iv of last week is appal liner. So vast was the devastation that followed in the wake of the earthquake and fire that it is impossible to realize its immensity. . The dis patches say that the city was almost wiped out of. existence; that hundreds perished and that hundreds of thousands are left homeless; that the property loss will run into the hundreds of millions; but, tlje finite mind .cannot grasp the infinite horror of it all. San Francisco, with its more than four hundred thousand in habitants, was the foremost city of the Pacific coast. l3nilt up on a magnificent scale and adorned with a lavisn Hand as Jbecame the principal city of the Uolden state, with its splendid business structures and its pal atial homes built by the bonan za kings of the earlj' days and its kings of commerce o.f today, few cities in Atnerica rivalled it in beauty. It was the Mecca of all tourists to the western coast. Today it lies in ruins, and the whole world bows in sorrow. With quick sympathy gener ous hands are stretched out tc the city, and practical aid is be sing hurried there from every. sec tion of the nation. Hundreds of thousands have been left hoine Jessind thousands destitute in the path of. the lire, and these are, being cared for as rapidly s. relief can be received and dirtfributed. , And, even while the ashes of 4he tall skyscrapers and thej stately homes are still smould ering, comes the report that San Francisco will be rebuilt. Profiting by the lessons of to day, the buildings of tomorrow will be built of sfeel, to with stand the. earthquake. Much of the charm of the old San Francisco has been lost forever, but the advantages of location which made it the , greatest city of the coast Will cause it to be rebuilt, and .Phoenix like, to rise from the ashes. say, Come up to see us in this end of the county, that we may become better acquainted with you. BAYLEY'S NOMINATION' The full returns from the pri inary nominating elections, ivhich were not received here until Tuesday afternoon, show the nomination vbf R. H. BayJey, of Laidlavv, tor county, commis sioner on the republican ticket. The contest for the nomination between him and Fred Fisher, of this place, has been a spirited one, but only with the sbirit of friendly rivalry. There has been nothing during the campaign J? il. . . 1. '' jor uie coMimissioiiersuip, wmcn could mar the very cordial re Jations existing between, the northern and southern ends of -western Orook, ..and .nothing which will prevent the whol,e 01 western Crook; from uniting in giving the successful candidate a hearty support. While there is disappointment in this end of the county over the deieat ot our candidate, there is no bit terness, and.we think that the emire west side ia to be con gratulated upon the character of tlie contest waged. Mr. Fisher's friends in this ud of the county urged his nomination because tbey be Jieved him especially fitted and qualified to secure for all parts of the county fair treatment through his presence upon the county board. The splendid endorsement which he received from his home precincts, is evi dence of the unanimity of that opinion among those who know him best. Ia the same spirit, the endorsement .which Mr, Buyley received in the southern end should dq sumcient guaran tee to us of his entire litness for the office to which he is norni jmted. We congratulate. Mr, Bayley upon the victory, and to him we TT 7 GR IT ( ) T 1C L 'u'ni,w',iWH-i.HiMsM."i'wui.i'iisiuMtiiii'.M,.ti,ii't,ni.isirfnM. W. C.
