THURSDAY April 5, 1 906 Registration shows this sec tion to bn the most populous portion of the county, and in no other section lias thn develop ment and settlement been so rapid during the past liveears. IMie fact that this great devel optnent in Western Crook eoun ty entitles us to representation upon the cotmiy board is con ceded by all who are fair mind ed and just, and there is a de termined effort in both ends of "Western Crook toeiecta coumy commissioner, but, the further fact that there is a candidate Seeking the democratic nomina tion for county commissioner, 'and that he is a "jriheville man" thai is, his interests all center at the bountyseat--is Tretty strong indication that Western Crook coUnty is not going to be permitted to have the county commissioner with put a struggle. A COMPLEX CANDIDATE. Jonathan Bourne, Jr., is truly a many-sided politician. The last time he bame into political prominence he was maintaining "headquarters" at Salem, spend ing thousands of dollars in an effort t'o debauch and corrupt the representative of the peo ple in the state legislature, to tmf end that he hiight "control" the election of the United States Senator. The part that BuuriiH played in the "hold-up session" of the legislature is one of the shadiest bits of Oi'egoh political history. And now, the passage of the direct primary law having been a direbt blov at corrupt machine methods in politics, Jonathan Bourne, Jr., appears in a new role, posing as a 'cham pion of the people. The purpose of the direct pri mary law is to secure a free and uninfluenced expression o f choice by the people. Jona than Bourne, Jr., vVho aspires to be the republican choice for United States Senator, is doing more to prevent ana ninaer a free and uninflueuced expres sion than any other man in the 6tate. With the assistance of a corps of trained politicians of the same stripe as himself, he is sending '6ut quantities of litera ture and letters to the voters in the rural districts, holding him Self up as the dnly original and Simon-pure friend of the people, the "champion of statement number one." At the same time, by the judicious distribu tion of fat morsels of advertis ing throughout the entire state, he has succeeded in muzzling most of the country newspapers nnd preventing them from tell ing about his p'asc record. If Bourne has ever done any thing to entitle him to the confi dence and support of the voters of ih'e dtat'e, why doesn't he point it out? Why doesn't he jpoint to some especial qualifica tion, something that fits him for 'the high office of a United States Benator? It is seemly in any candidate asking an endorse ment fdr the highest oflietj in the gift of the people of his state, to point to some accom plishment in the cause of the people. Past accomplishment, together with a clean public an,d. private record, is the only guar antee the. people can have for 'the future. And Bourne lias Kobe Of these.
