Hen Church left Sunday for Seattle, at which place he expects to join a parly of friends) who arc going up to the mines in Dritisb Columbia. Hen expects to be gone several months, Sherman J. Harrop returned on last Thursday from a two months' visit in the northwestern portion of Washington. He expects to remain here several months, but may return to Washington later on. The Madras Union Sunday school will give n concert next Saturday evening at the tclioollicusc, the proceeds to be used lor purchasing new song books. The program promises to be very interesting, Dr. A. U. King of Antelope came over to fee Fred Fisher again on last Friday. McTug gurt A. llyo. MiiijruH. G. Springer, a prominent stockraiser and farmer from the Culver neighbor hod, was a "visitor in town yestctday. Mr. Springer has one ol the finest ranches in this section of the county, apd in addi tion to lits farming interests he is devoting n considerable portion of his tjtpe to fine stock. I). Pombrowc, who has a, homestead fnnr miles southwest of this place, is dig ging n well upon his land and expects to sink to a depth of 150 feet if necessaty, in liiq efforts to get water for ranch and household purposes. It is believed, how ever, that water in abundance will be lie cured at n depth of from 100 to 125 feet U. S. Cowles and Geo. Mayes passed through town on last Thursday afternoon with two wagon-loads of fixtures and parts of the "still" which they will set up on the Deschutes near the Cowles saw mill within the next two weeks. Mr. Cowles says that the still will be in opera tion within the ncx 30 days. William Hocgli, formerly school super intendent of this county, and who some time ago bought the Ferd McCallistcr ranch on Crooked river, was in town last Thursday. Mr. Hocgli received a large consignment of fruit trees which had been shipped to him at this place. He is going into the fruit business on quite an extensive scale.
