Hon. E. L. Smith of Hoot; River, whose friends throughout Jlle state urged him to run for the gubernatorial nomination because thev believed that he was pre-eminently the man to lead the .republican forces to .victory, is going to prove an equally strong candidate for the United States SenatorBhip, for which office he has announced Jiimself. No man in the statn lias been more closely identi fied with the staters develop ment during the past 30 ?ears. nd hone knows better than he Jher .present needs. In his ca jpacifcy as president of the Ore gon Development League, Mr. Smith has been closely in touch with the forces now directed to .ward the exploitation and de ?velbpment of the country "when- rolls. the Oregon." His election to the .Senate would not only b a just reward to a man who has givf n a good many of the best efforts of his life to the advance iment of his state's interests, bin it would place him in a position ."where he could continue those .efforts to the greatest advantage of his state. There would be .1 less "politics" .and more good Jbusinees sense in the election ol GE.L. Smith to the United Slates (3enate than any other caudi ;date who has yet been named. ; THE CO-OPERATIVE PLAN. "Prineville, Ore., March 4, 1906 Mr. , Tumalo, Or. Dear Sir; il am in receipt of your letter in regard to ttr appropriation ot 5400 on trie isisemort and Sisters road. In reply will state thai 1 have been over said road nnd find it in; (excellent condition with the exception of a eiv sharp pitches, and even- then the road is in better condition than our roads lead -jing to our railroads over which all of our 'freight has to enter this country. And as 'there is a shortage of road funds this yeai; on account of the limited amount of gov ernment land sokL; we will have to be. 1 h - very economical" with same. But will,' 'jmake you the; same proposition that 1 vmake all similar road petitions. That is 'that the county will give dollar for dollar' for any amount which you people sub scribe. Very respectfully yours1, Iearl McLaughlin, County Road Master. McLaughlin has evidently. adopted the plan found so use-? ful by multi-millionaires in en -dowing colleges, libraries and' 'Similar institutions, that of re- quiring them to put up an amount equal to the endow' 'ment. This recalls the story of' 'the multi-millionaire, who hav-. -Jng passed to the Great1 Beyond, applied to St. Peter for admis sion through the pearly gales; ,Sti Peter informed him that he 'fconldn't enter there without ai ijajj oiu'pon which Moneybags cried, "A halo ! where can I get oner "iou inrmsii Halt 01 it, l oil nd I will furnish the other hplf," said St. Peter; " Fred Fishery candidate for the; republican nomination for coun ty commissioner, expected to. get into some of the other pre :(Uncts to meet the voters, but lie 'has been unable to do so owing 'to hjs serious illness of pneu 'jnonia, and it is nowquito like ly that he will not be able to do tyo ba6xQ th'e primaries htjx't month. : There ie a strong de mand for his' nomination, liotv ever, from this section of flie ktjount37 and his .cndidat5y is Unquestionably gaining ground i In other sections. There seems to be a growing Bontiment throughout tho county in favor of giving Western Crook county representation upon the county board, and Mr. Fisher's well known qualifications for the office are gaining his oandidnoy many friends. A. Bennett, kndwn as the Mark Twain of Oregon, and whose uRabbitville Items" have made his paper, the Irr.gon Irri gator, one ot the widest read country weeklies of the state, lias sold his newspaper to 0. 0 Hutchinson of irrigation fame. We'll miss the "Bunco House," the uBuljterbottom gal" and those soothing "perscriptions" obtainable nt the "pity Drug Store,", when, wo. are reading ver omvechanges,. . , - i . , . William Johnson, a caudidate for the li,epublipa,n nomination lor the office of ,county clerk was 111 town several days last week meeting the voters of this precinct. Mr. Johnson is one of the old residents in this county and has a wide acquaintance in most of the precincts. He was for six years a deputy in the office of the sheriff of this coun ty. Mr. Johnson's announce ment appears in another col umn. The political pot continues to boil, and this week has added another to the list of democratic candidates, although the re publicans appear to be "all up." Roscoe VV. Bell of this place has announced his candidacy for the democratic nomination for county surveyor, and he enjoys the distinction of being the first democratic candidate Madras has produced. Mr. Bell is a young man, unquestionably com petent, and his democratic affiliations are the worst thing his republican friends know against him. About four inches of snow fell Sunday night, and as the "round was not frozen and the weather which succeeded the storm melted the snow slowly, another fine lot of moisture has been added to the supplj' which is being conserved for the use of the growing crops this spring. . . , ! u-L ...
