C. C. Corey Slupf-rintendent4i of the
Warm Spring Indian Reservation, was a
visitor in Madras on last Saturday. Mrs.
Corey accompanied him.
G. K. Moorhead, who spent hut week
here, defending the contest against his
homestead on Agency Plains, returned
to his home at Dufur on Saturday.

Robert S. Muny of Camas Washing
ton was in town on Saturday looking after
his contest of the homestead entry of
Charles Uiercks. The contest was a de
fault case, the defendant not appearing.
Max Lueddeman left Tuesday mcrning
for The Dalles, to meet Mrs. Lueddemann
who is returning from a visit at her old
home in Moscow, Idaho. She will be
accompanied by her sister, Miss Carrie
McConnelt, who wil vtsi her at Mad
i us.
Max Wilson has purchased a half inter
est in the furniture business of 0. K.
Loucks & Co, and the firm in the future
will be known as Loucks & Wifson.
They will continue to look after the wants
of their costomers with a first-class
Stock.
Charles E. Lamson, who has been Visit
ing in the Culver neighborhood for sever
al weeks past, left Tuesday morning for
the Yakima country, in Washington,
where his family are already residing,
lie expects to locato. there permanently,
his father and brother having also moved,
to that locality.
Otto Hohlfeldt struck water in (he wej
he was sinking on his place in township
io range 14, last week, the water coming
in with a flow strong enough to yei'd
ample water for all ranch purposes. The
water was struck at a, depth of 125 feet.
Mr. Holfeldt has been very persevering in
his efforts to gr.t water op his ranch, and
he is naturally very much, gratified at his
success in fiinding it.
The "hard times party" gtven nt the
public school building on last Saturday
evening was a pleasant occasion, socially,
and a profitable one far the school from a
financial stand point, fts something over
S20 was raised for (he district. Messrs,
S. U. Percival and Rufus Campbell
each sang a solo, and there were Read
ings by Max Wilson, Glen Loucks and
Tom Tnylor, the program being enjoyed
by all. ARcr the regular program was
completed, Mr. Mason auctioned off a
number sofa pillows, and o'.her articles.
Cake and coffee was served by the
ladies.

Service at Warmspringt Agency, was in
Madras last Tuesday on business con
nected with the Indian Department.
Sherman J. Harrop and Elmer G.
Wooldridge, both prosperous farmers of
the Culver neighborhood, made proof on
their homesteads beforn Commissioner
Rea yesterday.

Want to be Postmaster.
Two petitions are being circulated this
week, asking for the appointment as post
master at Madras, to succeed Martin T.
Pratt, resigned. The applicants for the
appointment are John McTagg'art and
Fred Davis, each of whom is having a pe
tition circulated in his behalf.
Mr. Pratt's resignation was made
necessary by the fact that hi; presence
was required in Portlapd, for which reason
he could not give the ofllce his personal
attention, iiis many friends herp vjll re
gret to learn that he does not expect to re
turn to Madras soon, although "be rriay
return later on.
In addition to the parties, natt'd
above as applicants for appointment as
postmaster at this place, Charles F. De
lano is alsa an applicant and has been
circulating a petition during the week.
