The F. M. Loveland well wiiich is
being drilled on a lot in the same block
and J list south of the Pioneer office, has
reached a dcptii of over loo feet. At 40
feet basalt vyas struck, and they have been
drilling in that ever since. Mr. Lovciand
expects to sink until he strikes a good
flow of water, of which he thinks he will
find plenty when gets through the basalt.
Piincvjlle is to be connected with Al
bany by a telephone line extending acioss
the Cascade Mountains, and the line will
be completed as early in the spring as th
work can be done across the mountains

William H. Ostrander of Ridgcw.i
was in town last r rulay offering fua
proof upon his homestead in that neigh
horhood. It had been reported at Ante
lope, where Ostrandcr is well known, that
a horse he had been riding some three
weeks ago had turned up without its rider,
and that Ostrandcr had not been seen
Mnce that time, and considerable uncasi
ncss was felt there on account of it. In
(piiry was made by 'phone fiom Antelope
on Saturday, and they were informed that
Bill had been here "in the flesh" on the
preceding day.
J. A. Mcssinger of Hillsboro has pur
chased the Madras hotel property from
Archie Mason, the deal including the hv
cry stable run in connection with the ho
tel, and the price being 3900. Mr. Mcs
singer expects to move here in the spiing
and go into business at this point. For
the present the hotel has been leased to
W. C. Moore and the barn to Charles
Uizney, Mr. .Mcssinger visited in Mad
ras for a week during the early tail, nru:

from this point. They have been camprd
