THURSDAY p.cf. 26, 1905 Business ipen of Tht Dalles are making a strong effort to iave the Colombia Southern jrain which now runs between Suaniko and ?igps. ru,n on into The Dalles instead of stopping at Biggs. Certainly no more disagreeable stoppingplace ever existed than at Biggs, where the vind always blows and the sand fills the air. Tp add to flie disagreeableuess, of it, the west bound tvain on the O. R 5 N. is generally from two tf six hours late and this time must be spent at Bjggs. It will pertainly be a great boon to the traveling people of this section pf the State, nR9t pf whom go wegt frotn Biggs, if the train phoujd rm pn into The Dalles and permU them -to. spend the ong hours of waiting at that place. The Shaniko Bee is. the latest ves&el to launch on the tempest uous waters of journalism. Les N. Kelsay, late of the Central (Silver Lake) Oregonian, is at the helm. Long uiay she sail and prosper. A SHORTAGE OF SHgEP Telegram, C. J. Millis, livestock agent for the O. R, & N., says that never before in the history of the stockraising industry in Or egon have sheep been valued so highly as now. Mutton is sell ing on the hoof from S3.75 to '$4 The ruling quotation for years has been $?.50, but 111 the opin ion of Mr. Mollis, mutton will not soon decline to that level, . owing to the conditions now in- jiuenciug the Eastern markets. "There is a shortage of fully 20,000,OQQ sheep in the United States," remarked Mr. Millis to day. "Conditions appear fa vorable for a continuation of the prevailing high prices, because bo touch land has been taken up in the past four years, di minishing the gracing area and many pe;sons who formerly dealt in sheep have retired Oregon has a ldss percentage of the shortage than most states, and as a result the number oi sheep owned within its borders is increasing. Wool has taken an upward move, many con tracts -having been closed in Idaho for the 1900 clip at. 24 cents, which means that eveiy sheep sheared in Oregon will turn off its back $2. worth of wool, though up to date I have not heard of contracting being carried on for the new clip. "Shipments of sheep to the principal Eastern markets have been very heavy, and itis safe to say every available animal in the Northwest has 'either been placed in transit or is sold to be shipped, for there is a fitron""' demand. Conditions are better now lor uie sneepinen than ever before, and the out look is promising unless the speculators repeat the disas trous periormance of a few dayt Literary Society Reorganise.
