The report that Admiral

has asked the Czar to relieve
him from command of the Baltic

may be in doubt as to the-ont-come
of a conflict with. the3apsn

down with his ship and being a
dead hero.
Sheriff Word, of Multnomah

The last few days of warm
weather are greeted with satis
faction by the ranches of this
vicinity, and warm weather is
just what they need. The cold
days and nights of the past two
or three weeks have retarded
grain and gardens very material
ly. Besides, it has given the
cut-worms which are a general
pest iu.tlus part of the country
a longer lease of life. Two or
three hot days would 'icook the
goose" for these nuisances which
whieh are very destructive to
young vegetables.

The immigration into the
United States for the year 1905
is expected to be very near
1,000,000, and, it is of a class of
persons that this country would.
be very much oetter oft without.
Poor, ignorant, and in no way
desirable as citizens of any state.
The time has come when con
gress should pass a rigid re
striction on immigration to the
United States. The United
States'does not need people from
foreign countries to develop its"
resources as was the case at one
time. This western country still
has room" for more people,ibiUit
wants men or means and la
miliar with our institutions.
Men who are willing to spend
money to . brirjg the arid, por
tions of the Northwest to pro
ductiveness, and there is already
plenty of this class of persons
in the Eastern 8tates. The im
migrants swarming into the
United States at this time are
down-trodden, illiterate, have no
knowledge of government, and
titterally unfit for developing a
new 'country Let Congress
