The inspector took up a photograph lying on the desk before him and look ed from it to the prisoner. "It might have beon your picture aeveti or eight years ago. Singular case this. I mtiHt look Into it." Ho did look Into it and found that seven years beforo John Joslln, owing to his resemblance to Jim Boise, had gone to serve a twelve years' term in prlsoii. On morning John Joslln emerged fronfjhin roll, put on the clothes he had takca off seven years before utld pass-, etl dovn a corridor of cells amid a shower of congratulations. "Pardoned!" "(iood luck to you. I hopo you won't get caught next time." These were some df the remarks' made to the man who had under a mis take served a seven -years' sentence. The next morning he alighted from a train and walked over a road he had often walked before. The birds were flinging in the trees, the dew glistened lu the bum, the air was laden with a fresh country odor. Tho man walked till he came to a cottage. Sev eral half starved children gathered round, looking up nt tho mad and won dering who ho was, ."Courage, sweetheart," bo said; then, looking nt the children: "Thank God, we aro all here. We'll begin again. I am still strong and can work hard. We'll get plenty to eat nnd paint tbe hbuso and flx the fence and make ev erything tidy." "How comes It, John, that you are out?
