We say inebriates, dram- drinkers, stand from under I Our laud must bo freed from the influence of the rum-demon. Politically we can curtail his inflnonoe by the elevation of aober niea to places of trust and honrr ; let the shaping of onr laws be not in fluenced by the whiskey interest ; lot na stand shoulder to shoulder for P.igbt, for Truth and Dunbar, antil we have a representative in Con gress whom it will be an honor to acknowledge. Oue of the most useful volumes that was ever laid upon the counting room desk or the draw ing room table, is Hill's Manual of Social aud Business Forms. Scanning the table of con tents, it is impossible to conceive how so much can have been crowded into the confines of a single book ; but turning over the pages one by one, observing the fruit they bear, the method of its arrangement, its variety and complete ness, incredulity is succeeded by astonishment and aduiiratiou. This society organized but few weeks since, gave on Friday evening, April 7th, a public en tertainment, which proved a complete success, and gave satisfaction to all present. The house was filled. The young people of this place take a right course for its development. The exer cises consisic-u oi a spirited debate, well pre pared oration and essay, fine origiual poems.to- gether recitations aud colloquies, indispersed with good music both vocal and instrumental. The dosing address by the President was ren dered in rerse, and does credit to himself and to the evening s pertormance. At a previons meeting of the society, a fictitious trial ef "Zeke Skimmer, ' for the abduction ef Charlie Koss, resulted in bis being found guilty, and sen tenced to the penalty of treating the court aud spectators with candy. ADDRESS OF THE rBESIUENT. The literary society will soon come to a close, Not for the want of wit, talent or humor as some may suppose ; Not genius is a natural production of our town. Though this fact has not generally been noised auroaa. Our ladies for the coast. knowledge, can't be excelled on Of their wonderful achievements we boast, all like to They can sit on a Jnry and cause a great sinner To tremble in bis boots, as they did old "Zeke Skimmer," For recitations and essays I'm sure you will say, You've not met their equal for many a day. And then te assist us we've a com le of D. D's. Always ready and willing to help raise a breeze; rsotn louy ieiiowa out they Hon t quite agree How the affairs of society ill the next world shall be ; Hut they stick to the text and no doubt They save many a poor sinner who is nearing me DriuK There's one portly old judge with long flowing nair, In business or law is "right on the square ;" And of musical lore his head is crammed full He's scarce equal except "Ole Hull." And there 8 Senor Alexander from the south part of town, A poet and lawyer of very gre t renown, He thunders forth his argun e its with and furv With nods and sly winks while addressing the jury. A musician and poet too we have in our clan, 'Tis ltichard my friend, the cute little man, Hu's way up in oratory as he pleads at the bar, And discourses sweet music ou his Spinish guitar. And there's the prosecuting attorney with bibli- c u name, I'm happv to sav he acmiired a nntab'e fame. For genius and wit, though he's li cking in Yet immortalize 1 1 imself in irosecuting And others there are quite deserving of praise, "uu tb neijjeu w amuse us in various ways, Miss Kelty, Mi Flier. Monttronierv Queen seems to know exactly the wants of tbe people who patronize amusements on the 1'acina Coast. Last year tbe grand concen tration of talent which couipmed his elegant establishment seemed to ua as if yueen nau e&nausieu me equestri an world, and that no possible lm- Firovement could be made ; but tha ndefatigable and never tiring manav ger has succeeded in collecting togeth er new attractions and features that, were never offered our public before. Mr. Queen has procured a new and uagniflcant outfit for his caravan, and his daily free street displays cannot fail of convincing the most dubious doubter that Qjeen has by odds the most extravagantly gotten-tip estab lishment, not only in America, but that ever rolled upon wheels. Besides the new lofty bandcha-ioi,, Mr. Queer will introduce some new features in his processions, known as tableau cars. One of those repiessnts "Queen's Dream of our Hundredth Anniversa ry." The car is emblematic of oar country and tbe birth of iieedom ; in. the centre and upon a lofty platform stands the Goddess of Liberty, with a, living loose Senegal leopard crouching at her feet, surrounded by full life sized figures in gold of Justice and Columbia. Tbe others consist of mov ing tableaux. Prof. Pierce's group ot performing royal Bengal tigers com prise a living picture witnei ed only once in a lifetime. Zinzebar and five man-eating hyenas form another striking illustration of man's power over the brutes of creation. Madame Pauline, the only female sub J tier of lions on tbe Western continent, gives) a public exhibition of her reckleos dis regard of the great monarcbs of tlier ungies.
