My. The Statesman being religions paper
will only deal in faeis. and then only in d tVnsr
of morals, which is its misiotiecnlur attain-KiO-g
a seeontl.-tiy consideration.
Services at tlio feveial churches lent nl!ht
wore, well attended notwillistamliiiK the inclem
ent weather. There aro a Kieat many pious
people in Salem, which accounts for the good
order and extnovdiuaay moral condition of the
community.
Mr. Buchanan at tho lVnnett House lis
taken in a partner, who is well pos-ti d in the ho
tnl busine, ami everything will move straight
forward. The hungry will he fed as before at
twenty-five wnts per menl.and good fuod In
great variety furnished.
A fellow not a thousand miles from Silvorton,
who bad jttt lost lit sewnth wifu, was ap
proached hv a Mend who desired to extend his
sympathies, hot the afflicted Individual cut
short the words of consolation by remarking
that he never had "any luck with women."
The Statesman combines aeenlar with reli
gions matter in such a manner as to attract
scores of new readers. While it is religions
paper the news of the day is carefully sought
and the people find food for all mental demands.
We have demonstrate.! the fact that the people
will sustain a purely religious and moral paper,
but the news of the day must be added.

I. S. Mails are supposed to be transported

for winter months when the 'gentleiephyra" of
Eastern Oregon render top carriages useless.

An eminent Democratic politician of Marion
countv deli-ered a little stamp speech recently.
in which he proved, to hi own satisfaction at
least, that slavery is a divine instation. Fol
lowing this np he proved that the manufactur

were in most abject slavery, and their condi
tion was chargeable to the Republican party.
At this point eome one asked him why he wa
not a Republican then, and be answered that
he did not want to be interrupted by men who
knew so little and closed hia remarks.

The Home now is well furnished, and under
the superior management of .Mr. and Mrs. Jas.
Thompson, pnmnts a cheerful, l.om. hke ap
pearance, the interior as w -11 as the exterior
beiug kept neatly and inordtr. Since the So
ciety was organized some forty-one orplians and
friendless children have been provided f-r,
many of them being in a mosr destitute condi
tion upon their arrival at the Homo. We have
found homes for thirteen in worthy families,
where they are well cared for: some have been
taken by relative, only one dying while at the
Home; ten have been indentured to the Society
by their fathers.
We feel that it is part of oar mission to visit
the motherless as well as fatherless in their af
flictions and even to open our doors to the lit
tle waifa, otherwise thrown upon the cold char
ities of the world, with no one to love or pro
tect tin m. But with religions training and aid
from the well regulated public schools now in
our city, we hope to make of them men and
women to help support and adorn onr State, in
stead of rilling our prison and disreputable
houses. Sevent-en of this number have ben
nnder our care during the past year, eleven re
mainining there now. We were fortunate in
finding exeellent homes for fonr children dur

In a garden in this city we have some evidence
ot the mild weather to be found in Oregon at
this time of vear, and which, perhaps, has no
parallel in tho Tjuited States. Tomato vine
are budding out, some in full bloom, and have
on them tomatoes from the size of a pea, to thai
of a full grown one. Bean vine are in full
bloom and are bearing from the we sized pod

for the table. RadiBh tope which have ripe seed
pods on them also have fully developed and
well-filled green pods, while the stock are yci
