The morning train from Fortland brought up
seven car loads of passengers, which a as a de
cided falling off from the number of ywtrrday.

Is still the main point of attraction, especially
for the ladies, and in addition to our yesterday 's
le-port, we mention a few of the noticeable feat
tires. In the embroidery dep'-ment Mrs. K.
Varriner, Mrs. J. L. Wortloy, Mrs. E. M. vYito,
lira. M. Albert, and Miss M. B. MeMurray,
liavo made the largest entries. Mrs. Thomas
t'ann has a very handsomely embroidered chair.
There rre a targe number of tidies on exhibi
tion, and one of them, made by Mis Ann Fra
nor, txk up the spare time of 18 months. Misa
Eva Wnite, a little Salem lady of six Summers,
haa two patchwork quilts oo exhibition, whirh
are vrrv creditable to her. Mrs. Samh McCui
us, Mrs. Wann and other ladies have some
tine specimen of patchwork. A very fine col
lection of framed chromoa is made by Mrs.
John Holman. of Salem, and she takes the first
premium. Miss Nellie Mraeham takra the
lirst preminm for oil paint intra. Mrs. (leonje
Cooke has taken 15 first and lour second pre
miums for needle work. The examination of

The Salem Company has a most excellent
showing of fruits and vegetables, not ornament
ed at great expense in the way of fancy boxes,
etc., but depending npon the excellent quality

works gives special attention to the matter of

Fair, give any time to laiicy work, simply for a

premiums were awarded as follows: Horses of
all work, John Baxter 1st premium; two year
olds, X. Corantt, Canyonville, 1st premium;
yearling colts, V. M. liinearson 1st premium;
thoroughbreds, Win. Bingham's Lather" took
the 1st premium, and John Kediman 2d; Jacks
C. luitelie of Bethel took the 1st and S'm
White the 2d preminm; mules, M. Torter
1st preminm, and Fred Btiewer of Jefferson, 1st
premium for the best pair of draft mules; brood
leare and colt, John Downing of the Waldo

In addition to the number of cattle which
were examined in the arena, and which have
alreadv been mentioned, the following persons
took premiums for stock : Btewart A Jones, of
North Yamhill, took five first premiums and
six second. C. Eigga, of Rickreal, took the first
nrominm for throe-vear-old bull. Fisk A Dim
mick. of Hubbard, took two first premiums and
two second. Dimmiek & Davenport, of the
same place, took the first premium for a fonr-v.-r-oid
bnll. G. W. Dimmick A Sons took
first premiums for calves and heiters. and bnll
nmier one year. c. u. neeu. oi r orufuw, matie
nineteen entriea in this department, and was
awanled nine first premiums. Henry Myer, of
Dallas, was awanled three first prizes for bulls

SHEEP.
This department is Tery well represented.
Ralph C. 3eer, of 8ilverton, has twelve South-
downs, and David M. Guthrie, of Dillas, has
eleven thoroughbred French Merinos. Chas
Miller, of Jefferson, has a band of twenty-one
Spanish and French Mirinos, all of which look !
very well. Thos. Davidson, of Salem, has six
teen Snish Merinos, which may be said to
le tiie finest looking band on exhibition. John
Mmto, of Salem, has about fifty sheep entered,
thirty-three of them being pure Spanish Meri
nos, and the balance are verv tine gi-ailes. W.
T. Xewby. of McMinnville-, lias a band f about
fifty . seven of them being pure blooded Spanish
Merinos, and the others are grades. Mvssrs.
Severance A Test, o! California, have about
thirty pnre-blooded Spanish Merinos, but have
not entered tbem. ami then-lore are not con

looking animals. Moving to the next pen we
find ourselves among
. THE AGOKA GOATS,
Which animals attract considerable attention.
J. L. rarrish, of Salem, has twenty goats, some
of them rure Angoiaa, and the balance high
grades. J. M. Fugh, of Salem, has tight on
exhibition, some of which are pure bloods ; Chas.
Claggett, of Salem, has three pnre blooded An
goras and six graded. Franklin Yokuni, of a
lern, has fourteen goats in the pens, anions them
some pure bloods. Mr. Yoknm exhibits tlie
pelt of an Angora, the fleece of which is as Bolt
and fine as silk. Messrs. Landrnm A Rogers, of
California, have a drove of alout 1.400 goats
pastured in tlie vicinity of the l air Gronnd,
and have some thirty-live pure bloo,ls on exhi
bition, one-half of" which have alreadv been
sold. These gentlemen exhibit a large number
of pelts, some of them dyed in fancy colors.

have also some specimens of mohair cloth,
which was manufactured in New York Stme
from the fleece of Angoras. J. J. Shaw, of Sa
lem, has four fine graded kids on exhibition.
This Angora Goat business seems to be attract
ing considerable attention in Oregon, and from
present appearances it will some day lie an ex
tensive interest. The fleece at present com
mands from 60 cents to $1 per pound.
Leaving the stock pens, we elbow onr way
through the crowded pavilion and come to tlie
AC.KICCLTVRAL, IMPLEMENTS.
The display in this department is very lare,
and shows that the tide of progress is washing
np its fruits for the benefit of the husbandman.
The machinery is in position under the shed
near the west gate, and consist of harrows,
prows, cultivators, grain separators, wagons, etc.
Prominent among the exhibitors are Messrs.
Knapp, Burrell ft Co., of Portland, who Lave
tlie five foot sickle with sclf-raking attachment,
which is a fine Biaebtuw. A two-horse power
has attra. i" niJfcrable attention, and is very
culistential, us it has a wrought iron frame.
They have also twelve Champion Moline plows,
that cut from 10 to 10 inch furrow, and are very
hihly finished; the mould board is as bright as
steel can make it. A horse hoe or reversible
plow is a very useful implement, and will prob
ably he adopted by many who have examined
it. " There is a one-borse cultivator of live teetti
auJ reversible diamond si, aped pk ws. bnt this
is rivaled by a nine-toetli inijit-n-n-. that stamls
next and elicits considerable discussion. Among
Ute harrows we noticed those that revolved and
others that folded. There is one of Fills' eight
horse power threshers that has one of Cbeeney's
patent breaks npon it, f,.r the purpose of pre
venting ruuawas. A .Marsh Harvester is a
beautiful machuie to look at, and nndeubtedly
must do good work, judging from the number
sold. An old-fashione d liianchard churn mod
estly assorts its many virtues by its presence.
Haw ley, Dodd A Co., are on hand, as usual,
with a big display of machinery, as is their
wont. They have a ten-horse power Champion
thresher, a Schuttler wagou, and a prairie
hreaking plow, which has a great deal of enrve,
and is evidentaly a gcod thing. The celebrated
manufacturer, John Ileere, lias a variety of
implements tlirongh tnis firm; among the most
notable is his sulky and gang plows.
Mr. Aver, of the firm of D. M. Osborn A Co.,
of Auburn, Ji. Y., has placed on exhibition sev
eral new machines, consisting of Wheeler's
combined self raker and mower, a combination
of all the patents of the members of that large
manufacturing company, the gearing being in
closed in a box, and entirely protected, and lu
brication with oil. Minute descriptions of these
machines would consume more room than de
sirable. They were awarded first premium at
tlie late California State Fair. '1 lie liurdiek
Ceres reaper is center cut, and can be raised or
lowered as desired. The two-wheeled mower is
a small and compact machine and runs verv
light,
T. Cunningham A Co., of Salem, are the gen
eral agents for the Garden City works, consist
ing of plows, cultivators, etc. They have sold
during the last season forty-one of Adams A
Freuch's harvesters, while the remainder of
their display is creditable.
Two gentlemen by the name of Sherrel A
M acy , of Hrrrisburg, have invented a harrow
that is well spoken of.
Afternoon.
. A considerable laliius off in the attendance
was noticed this afternoon, although there
Was still an immense crowd on the grounds,
and every "mnable" vehicle in town was en
gaged in transporting people from Salem out
to tlie grounds. Shortly after dinner the
larger part of the crowd started to witness
the proceedings
AT THE TBACK
The great running race attracted an immense
CDQcoaxse of people who filled the two stands
and lined the fencca for hundreds of yards either
aide nf the Judge stand. While hundred of
vehicles loaded down with person of all ages
were scattered around on the turf on the inner
si.le of the track. For tlie running race, Tweii-tv-one,
Foster and Napa, put in an appearance.
The race was for horse, mare or gelding, free to
all, 2 mile heats. 1st premium fciiH), 2d premi
um, $l"id. 1J premium $75.
After two false start the horse got away,
Foster leading closely followed by Napa, with
Twenty-One trailing some ways behind under
a strong pull. On the home stretch of tho first
mile Twenty-One closed the gap and all three
horses passed the stand close together. Tho
wav the last mile wan ran it waa evident that
Tw'enty-One had tlie heels w hea it came to a
brush. The horses came in foster first, Napa
second, Twentv-One third and on "three legs."
Upon examination it was found that he had
strained one of the leader of his left fore legs
and consemientlv was dead lame. ITe was of
course withdrawn. The crowd i disappointed
but accidents will happen. We give

were presented and had we been one of the
judges we would have unhesitatingly given each

which took place in the arena at S o'clock
and was witnessed by an immense crowd
who evinced the most intense interest in the
exercises. There were nine entrio made
and after the ladies had shown their skill in
the art of eipiestrmnship, the judges awarded
thetirst premium to Mr. Nixon, of Finn
Countv. the second premium to Miss Jose
phine Smith.of Salem, and the third premium
to .Miss Annie uonnson, oi inueiteiniem-e,
Among the rulers was Mis Julia 1. Clarke,
of Cottage tirove. Fane Countv, who rode
bareback. She showed h rsell to be perlactly i
at home on horseback, and the general opin
ion ot the spectators was that she was ihe
most finished and graceful ruler in the areisv
She was cheered on every siile, and when the
crowd saw that she was awarded no premium
thev immediately made HP a purse of $31 50
and" presented it to her. The lady who bad
been awarded the lirst premium changed po
sitions with Miss Clarke, and started around
the nren bareback. But before she had got
completely around she was unhorsed, lighting
on her teet as sne came to the ground. At
this the crowd of spectators sent tip another
shout, and the sympathy of the crowd was
more than ever in favor of the bareback rider.
The first premium amounted to but f l so
that .Miss Clarke tared much belter than if
she bad taken the first premium. Consider
able unfavorable comment was made upon the
decision ot tlie judge. We wci-e unable to
ascertain the names ot all the ladies present
ill the arena, but he-ide those mentioned
above there were Miss Taylor, of Saiem. -Miss
Miller, of Folk County, and the two Misses
Smith. Notwithstanding the attractions at
the track and other points,
THE FWIMON
was crowded throughout the afternoon as
usual. The piano and organ which have been
placed in the Pavilion by Mr. Leo Willis, ol
Salem, were in constant u. and the ivories
were artistically finsrered bv Miss Klla
Wright, Miss Teresa Uolderness, Miss Klla
Chadwick and other young ladies of Salem.
Many spectators congregated in the vicinity.
AFTER THE RACKS
Salem people, who were present in large
numbers during the day, commenced to light
out for home, and the campers congregated
around their primitive habitations and par
took of their mippers, after which many of
them came into town to attend the theatrical
performance at the Opera House.

and the various side-shows and establishments
ot lesser note did a very extensive business.
The full moon looked down upon the scene,
and many of the campers commenced to pack
up their superabundant traps, and prepare
lor an earlv start tor home in the morning.

The atmosphere in the morning was heavily
impregnated with dampness, and the fog was
so dense that many hack drivers thought se
riously ot laying in a stock of Cape Cod fog
horns, or cow bells, to prevent collisions on
the roai. The first thing in order this morn
ing was the work of
BREAKING CAMP,
Which was prosecuted with vigor among the
campers directly after breakfast. Soon after,
wagons loaded with families aud their mov
able effects, lined the roads leading from the
Fair tiroumts. The Fair, to which tliey had
looked forward with such pleasant anticipa
tions for weeks and months was now practi
cally over, and the campers were as eager to
leave and get to their homes as they were to
get to the Fair. Standing around camp
seemed to lie very disagreeable business, on
act omit ol the dampness and chillincBs of the
atmosphere, ami overcoats and shawls were
very generally worn, ( amp tires were kept
burning in many localities, and tlie campers
huddled around them, an ! us usual in such
cases, kept one side of the person red-hot
while the other side was chilled.

Consisted "f six passenger cars, and brought
up a small number of passengers. A large
crowd awaited it on the platform, and were
soon on board and on the wav to their homes
up the valley. All seemed to be perlectly
satisfied with their experience at the Fair,
ard were expressing good opinions of Salem
and her people.
ABOUT AND AROUND
The grounds people were moving to and fro,
as usual, but the crowd was very perceptibly
growing beautifully less. About the pavilion
articles were being packed up and removed
as fast as possible, and soon many of the
shelves and walls which have tor the past
week been ornamented with useful and fancy
articles, were entirely empty. Salem was
pretty well represented in the pavilion, many
of tlie young lolks having come out to wit
ness the
THE TROTTING
In the morning was for Oregon bred animals,
open to horse, mare or gelding ot any age,
mile beats, three in five; first premium, $175;
second premium, 75; third premium, $50.
Xo horse which had beaten 3:30 was allowed
to enter. There was a large attendance at
the track, and considerable coin changed
hands. The horses enter! were brown mare
Belle, bv J.J. Welch; black horse Ham Boyd,
bv B. li. Acker, Fly by Night, by Seals, and
Small Hopes, by W. B. Jl oxter. Belle won
the race, and Ham Boyd took the second
money, while Small Hopes was distanced the
first heat, aud Fly-by-Night the third iieat.

BASEBALL.
The most exciting feature of the day was the
game between the College club and Aldinea for
the first premium. The College, the victors of
the contest of the day previouwith the Pioneer
of Portland, came on to the diamond field con
fident. The Aldinea did well under the circum
stance, their catcher just convalescing from a
serious illness and several of the first nine be
ing absent, yet we accord to the College club the
luii honor ox Wing,

they adopted the half fare dodge. A number

There waa fiftv-two dollars subscribed for the
set of colors to be prrfjnted to the new
boat. City of Salem. Bv advices from San Fran
Cisco it is found that twenty dollars mora will
be required to purchase the article, ten of which,
is already in tight. If anyone desire to add to
the fund they are requested to leave the money
at W. W. Martin's store. So far, the araonn
has been cheerfully contributed, only four hav
ing declined to give tlie half-dollar solicited
Too much credit cannot be acceded to Capt-
Boott for his enterprise, with small pecuniary
resou rces he lias demonstrated tlie fact that the
Willamette river can be navigated the entire
year, and the w histle of the tittle Ohio has been
heard all summer, as long a there wa a sack
of wheat to float down stream The new boat
is a fine large one, and we shall welcone the

Rev. E. J. Dawue informs us that a number
of students have applied during the week, and
will enter school Monday. There is still room
for more, the building it large nd well fu
Dished. Toting ladies and gentlemen wishing
to teach, cannot do better than place themselves
nnder the critical training of I?r. Dawne nd
wife. No school in the State is more thorough
in its course of study. Young gentlemen de
siring a knowledge of mathematics to prepare
them for business will do well to avail them
selves of the advantage of this school. Rates
of tuition are certainly very reasonable.

We are informed that a German family named
Burrenger, living in South Salem, are at pres.
ent In want, on acconnt of sicknes. The fam
ily is described as industrious and self-snpport-
ing when in health but at present are nnable
to labor, or gain a subsiatanee owing to the ill

Mr. Ciayborne H. Walker, the umpire of the
three game at the Fair Grounds, made his de
cision last night in reference to the game played

We are informed that Mr. J. C. Berry, one of
our well known citizens, was stricken down
with paralysis, Thursday. But a few momenta
before the attack he was enjoying hi nsual
good health, when on making preparations to
retire for the night, he found that one side of
his body was entirely paralyzed. He wa con
sidered in a critical condition until last evening,
when his condition seemed to improve, aud he
is now much better.
Take Kick at the Fair tiround.
We are informed that Mr. William Beckett,
living near Perrydale, Polk county, was taken
sick on the Fair Greunds, Friday afternoon,
and in the night became delirious. Yesterday
morning he was removed to thi city, and Dr.
Ehjlton was called, who pronounced his disease
congestion ot the brain. He is surrounded by
friends and relatives, who will do all in their
power to relieve him.
A False Hepors,
A report was current on the streets last even
ing that the residence of Mr. Al Savage on
Salem Prairie had been burned down wnile the
family were attending the State Fair. Upon
tracing np the report we found it had arisen
from the fact that a large fire had been seen in
the range of the house which proved to be the
burning of a straw stack some distance beyond
the honse.

Mr. Landrnm of California will remain in
the city for two weeks t o deliver the goats that
he has sold. He ha also a few hundred head
still for sale which are pastured in a lot near the
Fair Ground. Those interested will make a
note of it.
Ana Broken.
At the Fair Groand yesterday while riding
in a swing propelled by a lot of other small boys,
a son of Mr. Wm. Leavitt, of this city, fell out
and broke his arm. He was brought into town
for medical assistance, and was made as com
fortable a3 possible.

A man whose name we could not learn, was
brought into the city last night from towards
the Fair Ground, at a late hour with a broken

No two words in the English language ran
send a more chilling sensation to the heart than
those two that head this item. But we are often
called upon to record the finding of some per
son who did when no living person was by to
witnes their expiring breath. Last Sabbath
morning, about one o'clock, Mr. Charles Stone,
npon returning to hi room in a building on
the alley between State and Ferry streets, found
lying upon the floor near the door, the body of
hi room-mate, Mr. Charles Knop or, as he
waa generally known by the name of " Steam
ship Charlie." Knop had been complaining
during the day previous, and seemed to hare
considerable difficulty in breathing, but as he
bad often been affected tlie same way, nothing
particular was thought of it at the time. We
have known Charlie for years, snd can remem
ber him as steward on the Cromwell line steam
ers between New York and New Orleans, and a
good on he was, and but for the demon drink
might have obtained any position in hiB line he
might have desired. Bis many years of inter
course with the traveling public gave him a
genteel, affable manner that he retained to the
day of his death. Always eourteong and pleas
ant to those he met, " Steamship Charlie's"
name will be remembered by those who knew
him in the yoanger days of his life with emo
tions of regret. Coronor Dr. E. R. Fiske was
notified, and a jury was empanelled, some testi
mony was taken, and th following
VEEDICT RENDERED.
We tlie undersigned called this day, Oct. 17,
1S75, as Coroner jury to examine into the cause
of the death of Charles Knop, do find after a
careful investigation of the testimony and ex
amination of the body that he came to his death
from natural causes, and that an apoplectic fit
and a diseased condition of tlie heart for some
time preceding it was to the best of our judge
ment and belief the immediate and remote
causes of his sudden end.
