Having examined these sledge-hammer
taps critically and impartially, we
concede that our condition is, or ought
to be, one of pulp, and we. are really
ashamed to tly in the tace of nature by
pretending to be In a healthy and or
ganized State after such hard uage. It
never occurred to us before that it was
just the thing for Smelling Committees
to twist their noses sky-ward and de
clare that they smelled something.
jyhen they didn't ; we were opaquely
impervious to the consideration that
Mr. Amis, and his military colleague
would never have signed the Report
had they not known how pure and
true it was ; but our greatest error was
in being ignorant of the fact that G ro
ver and the ilercury people had them
telvet examined the Report, and had
pronounced It a work of unusual litera
ry merit. Ignorance is no excuse for
crime, and it was in our criminal want
of Information on this subject that we
became a prey to sledge-hammer taps
f of tlie direst, force. And then how
wickedly foolish of us to believe tliat
the people, who pay the printer, should
care anything about how the Report
was made or what testimony was in or

were to sicken with the salute of an

an average of four weeks. Tlie no

Some of them are longer and some
slwrter as everybody understands ; but
for the purpose of Illustrating the rob
bery which tlie Litigant law legalizes,
we will take the time, four weeks, and
the number of squares, two. For
publishing such a notice, the organ Is
allowed $5 for tlie first insertion and
$2 tor each of the three subsequent in
sertions, making a total of $11. This
is ati outrageous price and is more
than any of the metropolitan papers
charge, and considerably more than
double what any ot the country litigant
papers can get tor mercantile adver
tising. For instance, the Mercury,
the litigant organ for Marion count,
will not pretend tliat it can get any
such price for any business advertise
ment. That paper certainly does not
charge its business nitrons who are
not compelled by law to abvertise in
it, more than halt tliat sum. Our
charge for a two square advertisement
In tlie Weekxt Statesman, four inser
tions, is $5 ; does the Mercury charge
more titan tliat for a mercantile adver
tisement ? And ye,t, under the Litigant
law it-gets (11, and the' party adver
tising has not the opticu to advertise
in the Statesman where lie could get
It done for $5. We doubt not, the
Farmer would also do it for $5. ISo, a
person Iiaving legal advertising to do.
is robbed under Democratic legisla
tion of $G, every time he has occasion
to publish a two square advertisement
for four issues of the litigant organ.
The Illustration Is so simple and plain
that even the dullest man can see tlie
infamy and outrage there is in tlie
Democratic Litigant law.
