at the M. E. Chorch last evening to

Hand Isjched. Caleb Chapman, a
teamster employed by the Hack and
Dray Company of this city, had his
liana badly crushed Monday last
while engaged in hauling stone from
the quarry at South Salem. We could
not learn the full extent of his injury
but understand it will lay him up for
a few weeks.

Salem Ilon Works. Through the
courtesy of Mr, Ilolman. foreman of
these works we were yesterday xhown
through this establishment, owned by
Bw F. Drake ot this city. The im
pression seems to have become spread
abroad that Salem was behind hand In
tlie manufacture of steam machinery
but, judging from appearances around
these works this Impression should be
dispelled. Mr. Drake has just com
pleted an engine for Davis Bros, of
thirty horse power which in style of
finish and durability of material and
workmanship cannot be excelled by

per Sons of Independence, who pro
pose to erect a steam saw and grl
mill. This engine will be of forty

planing mill that answers the wants of

that of Eastern manufacture, from the
fact that it can be arranged to do al
most any kind of work, in a manner
excelled by no other machine. The
cost of the machines is also much re
duced.. Several of them are in use in
, different portions of the State, anil
they give eeneral satisfaction. These
works were burned to the ground some
time since, but have been rebuilt, and
are now turning out a large amount ot
work of all kinds. They keep from
fifteen to twenty men constantly em
ployed, and engage only the best work
men. Mr. Hoi man is considered one
ot the best machinists in the State, aud
Mr. Atkinson, his moulder, won't
take a back seat" with any of his
craft. , Works like tliesc are a public
good, and we are pleased to see them
succeed. , ,

should own thteen hundred feet of good
hose. This would give each company
seven hundred and fifty feet, so that

are stationed. It is not often they
would need a larger supply, and should

Badly Frozen.- R. H. Price of
this city recently received a letter from
some brothers of his living np in the
Paiouse valley abve Walla Walla W
T. giving a detailed account ot a trip
they took during the recent cold spell.
They started early in the morning to
go to their mothers about twenty
miles distant. A snow storm overtook
them before they bad gone any great
distance, but they pushed on thinking
they would be able to get through
without any great difficulty. Taking
no food with them, as they supposed
they would find a supply on the road,
they soon began to suffer from both
hunger and cold. But they plodded
on until twelve o'clock the following
night when the older one gave out.

laid down in the snow which they found
over three feet in depth. Awaking
the following morning they were com
pelled to cut their boots and tie them
on their feet, and with renewed cour
age they again faced tlie storm and
, though frequently falling from sheer

eleven o'clock the following morning,
not having food since they started out,

proved them to be gifted with great

Thursday, April 4th, a gentleman by
the name of Montgomery married a

the Union Hotel in this city, and after

the groom hired a carriage and took his

city immediately. The next day he

hear, buildings built In this way are
very apt to settle, and ruin the whole
structure. The M. E. Church has set

are only completed a very small way
up. The contractors on the Sisters
School house have prepared a seven
foot foundation tor their tmilding. and

- equally as solid a foundation. Nearly

dations are unsafe. A building so ex

day, James Temple, a farmer in Mc
Craken county, formerly Rector of the
Episcopal church, shot a negro named
John Smith, putting thirteen buckshot
in his body. The negro ran about one
hundred yards and fell, when Temple
went.up to him, put I be muzzle xf his
gun to his head aud discharged the
other barrel, blowing his brains out.
Temple was arrested and examined.
The evidence showed that Smith had
been employed iu Temple's lion-
in making fires, aud while in his
1 daughters' room took oc sion to use
insulting language towards them, aud
afterwards boasted around of having
criminal connection with them. This
was told to Temple, who is very deaf,
and of a nervous excitable tempera
ment. Coning suddenly upou Smith,
he shot him under an ungovernable
