There was a good audience assembled

Is TliOUMJE First class temper
ance lectures, are an everyday occur
rence just nw. Scarcely a day passes
but we see some individual with too
much benzine on board and giviii
practical illustrations of the evils of
Intemperance. Yesterday afternoon
tliere was a drunken man turned out
of one of our saloons having too much
on board, and growing somewhat bois
terous, be soon after entered one of our
groceries and raised so much disturb
ance that a policeman was compelled
to take him in charge and be slept in
the calaboose last night, where he
could ruminate over bis degradation at
leisure.
Mischief. Somebody, imbued with
the spirit of mischief, no doubt, has
been doing Royal Bro.'s the doubtful
favor of tearing down some fine lar
. business cards, Which tbey had put up
in various places around tlie city, only
a day or two ago. We suppose that
the police would make it particularly
interesting for such marauding chaps
if they should happen to catch tliem in
the act.
Stock Killed. Passengers on yes
terday mornings train for Portland
report the killing of a fine steer be
tween Marion and Turners station.
The animal was on the track and in
spite of tlie endeavors of the engineer
to stop tlie train tlie cowcatcher caught
him and dragged him some twenty or
thirty rods and when It was removed
tlie critter was too indisposed to get
up.
Hand Isjched. Caleb Chapman, a
teamster employed by the Hack and
Dray Company of this city, had his
liana badly crushed Monday last
while engaged in hauling stone from
the quarry at South Salem. We could
not learn the full extent of his injury
but understand it will lay him up for
a few weeks.

Salem Ilon Works. Through the
courtesy of Mr, Ilolman. foreman of
these works we were yesterday xhown
through this establishment, owned by
Bw F. Drake ot this city. The im
pression seems to have become spread
abroad that Salem was behind hand In
tlie manufacture of steam machinery
but, judging from appearances around
these works this Impression should be
dispelled. Mr. Drake has just com
pleted an engine for Davis Bros, of
thirty horse power which in style of
finish and durability of material and
workmanship cannot be excelled by

the people in uregon iar oettcr man
that of Eastern manufacture, from the
fact that it can be arranged to do al
most any kind of work, in a manner
excelled by no other machine. The
cost of the machines is also much re
duced.. Several of them are in use in
, different portions of the State, anil
they give eeneral satisfaction. These
works were burned to the ground some
time since, but have been rebuilt, and
are now turning out a large amount ot
work of all kinds. They keep from
fifteen to twenty men constantly em
ployed, and engage only the best work
men. Mr. Hoi man is considered one
ot the best machinists in the State, aud
Mr. Atkinson, his moulder, won't

Moke Hose Needed. In conversa
tion with some of our leading firemen.
we And there Ls a great demand for
some new base for the use of tlie de
partment. The city now has Iwogood
-lire companies the members df which
are of the hc-st material, and men who
are ever ready to dp their utmost when
there may be occasion for tlielr ser
vices ; but they often find themselves
crippled ty the scarcity of hose. 'We
are liable to the loss of considerable
property at any time, unless tills want
Is supplied, itoth companies com
bined have now only about four hun
dred feet of hose, just enough to con
vey water a trifle over one block
Divided as it. is between the two,
neither one am scarcely throw a stream
from Court to State street. Now
should a fire break out two or three
blocks from any avadable place of
securing water, our engines would
prove of no use, whatever, and life and
property would be much endangered
This shouiu not be so, and we feel as
sured that when our citizens realize
how matters stand, steps will be im
mediately taken to remedy the evil.
At the very least figures this city
should own thteen hundred feet of good
hose. This would give each company
seven hundred and fifty feet, so that
when needed they could play on a tire
three blocks from where their engines
are stationed. It is not often they
would need a larger supply, and should
sucn De tne case, uiey could uounie up
ana carry tne stream still lurtlier,
Tliey always need some extra ho-, so
that in cam a section should burst, they
opuld fill its place. Just give the boys
a i.'iir cnance, anu we Know that tney
will always do tlieir best. They are
energetic enough for anv emergency.
and are ever ready to do their duty as
firemen. We would suggest to the
bose companies to get up an entertain
ment of some kind and aid themselves
in this work. Amusements are scarce
just now and a ball, festival, or ama
teur drama, would call forth a good
crowd, and outside talent would aid
the enterprise; Stir around among
yourselves ami see wnat vou cm do.
and we doubt not, your effort will meet
with abundant success.
Badly Frozen.- R. H. Price of
this city recently received a letter from
some brothers of his living np in the
Paiouse valley abve Walla Walla W
T. giving a detailed account ot a trip
they took during the recent cold spell.
They started early in the morning to
go to their mothers about twenty
miles distant. A snow storm overtook
them before they bad gone any great
distance, but they pushed on thinking
they would be able to get through
without any great difficulty. Taking
no food with them, as they supposed
they would find a supply on the road,
they soon began to suffer from both
hunger and cold. But they plodded
on until twelve o'clock the following
night when the older one gave out.
Tlieu pulling oft their boots they both
laid down in the snow which they found
over three feet in depth. Awaking
the following morning they were com
pelled to cut their boots and tie them
on their feet, and with renewed cour
age they again faced tlie storm and
, though frequently falling from sheer
extaustton, they perservered . aud
finally reached their destination at
eleven o'clock the following morning,
not having food since they started out,
The oldetone froze both his feet badly
and tlie younger one escaped with his
ears Only frozen. Their adventure
proved them to be gifted with great
endurance, and although one or ttiem
is still unable to do any work, they
consider themselves fortunate to have
escaped alive.
. , Mysterious Disappearance. A
case of this kind is related to us and
we give our readers the benefit of it,
in hones, that it may be the means of

abouts of the individual in question

The-Couet House Foundation.
.. .. .. . .
We notice that tlie foundation of this
building is only laid about one foot be-
s low the surface.' From what we can
hear, buildings built In this way are
very apt to settle, and ruin the whole
structure. The M. E. Church has set
tled ii one spot already, and the walls
are only completed a very small way
up. The contractors on the Sisters
School house have prepared a seven
foot foundation tor their tmilding. and
. we should think tliat a public building
which Is to stand Tor years should have
- equally as solid a foundation. Nearly
all tlie brick walls in Salem are cracked,
. a fact which shows that shallow foun
dations are unsafe. A building so ex
pensive as toe court 'house ought to
