'-'WhAT Ait Mm? Salem, it seems, is not behindhand in tlie way of nat ural curiosities. We feared she was. We have noticed with undisguised jealousy that other towns have their oddities, but until very recently Salem has been compelled to tike a back seat," and unable to show a single object to compete with thoe of her sister towns. But we have become eiicoiiRigjd of late, and now we are on the broad raid to notoriety. Our at tention was called to the following case a few days stnee, but we were nther cautious about mentioning it. it " belns thcu rather too near the 1st of April.. But yesterday we had tlie facts from too eood autlmrity to doubt tlieir truth. There resides in Xorth Saletn a young uiansurnnnied Charles, son of. John Gilmorai well known by his many patrons iu this city. This voHtiir man is now sixteen years of nge. and remarkably loquacious at home and in tlie Ciniily circle natur ally bright and intelligent, conversing on any subject with apparent ease and . ut no wise iMclfwaru tn itis. (UUiy in tercourse with lk parent or member of the family. But now comes the strange difference between him and his fellows. He Ik never keen known to exchange one word with a stranger. and when among them seems utterly unable to articulate a single sentence, lie lias benn eut to several different scliools, and though apparently learn ing his lessons, will never recite them to a teacher, and none of tliem have ever succeeded iu inducing him to utter a word. Our attention was called to tlie fact by hearing of his en tering Mr. Fliedner's Imrber shop, wliere his compttuious were compelled to make known his wants. These things seem almo-t sensational but they "are facts, nevertheless, as many of our prominent citizens can testify. The question arises. Why is tliis thus?" We give it up. Perluips some of our learned men can solve It. We leave it with our readers as a mys tery to us, at least. ' Rev. Mu. Stkwakt's Li.cti.kk. . ttew.W. F. Stewart of this city, lec tured, at Portland. We were up sufficiently early yesterday morning to see onr side walks covered with frost, but we have not lieard of any damage being done. We can dispense with any more of his visits until late next fall. He is never a very welcome visitor. Another Salkm Lectipek. Mr. Sylvester C. Simpson, Ksq., of this city, will deliver the last lecture of tlie course before the Young M en's Chris tain Association of Portland, next week. From Dully if Friday Apr. 5. Lir.itAKY Rooms. For many mouths pa'st Salem has felt the need of a Public Library, and various propo sitions have lieeu considered ; but as no definite arrangements have been made, the want still remains unsup plktl, and the community is losing the benefits tlwt might be secured by an institution of tliat kind. Xo one can deny the fact that a public reading room, well tilled with the leading periodicals of the day-and good books treating on varied subjects, exerts an influence for tlie good of any commu nity. Is it any wonder that so many of our young men spciHl their evenings iu liaunts which do them no good ? It is' not always their depraved natures that induces them to seek bad company, and its accompanying vices, but a natural craving for amusement, or em ployment. Were there only a reading room established ".' here, our friends would be surprized to see the number C tliat would spend their time tliere, in stead of worse than throwing it away as nianv of tliem do at present. It - would -lead to much good, and we have a plau to propose by which such an arrangement couirt lie mane Kev P. S. Could one hundred vearly ' members be collected at an annual con tribution of five dollars each, a. suffi cient um could lie raised to start tlie tiling along,; and as the expenses of maintaining it would be very small. we think that enough monthly mem bers could be induced to keep it mov ing. Calico Ball. This grand affair came off last night and was a success in every sense of tlie word. There were some seventy couple present, and swallow-tail coats and calico dresses were all the rage. Tlie young ladies showed excellent taste in their toilets and, to our taste, looked as lovely in their calico dresses, as they would were they enrobed iu silks or satin. Some of the young gentlemen were "got up regardless of expense'' and shone forth In gorgeous array. Several calico coats were worn on this momentous occasion, and we notice one fair haired youth that sported a whole suit of tlie same material. We did not see his tiaudkerchief or hose but take it for granted they were of the same niiite rial. Both the Senate and legislature Halls were iu use. and the floors were kept crowded the entire evening. Joyous taces and bright smiles denoted a good time among the pnrtieipaters. Tlw dancing was kept, np to a late hour and all Went home honing tliat this occasion was only a forerunner of many of the kind. Nkw Kaii.koad.
