K. Lohr, jr., went to Portland this week, and after a fferil with his mother in that city, he will proceed to Kansas city to spend a few weeks visiting with friends. The job made a wall of concrete, three feet thick at the bottom, seven feet for a foundation and seven feet for the superstructuie, the top be ing thirteen inches thick. The work is being well done and it will last for all time to come. Contrary to expectations, work on the well digging job has been stopped, al though the outfit is St. ' here. The bole was pnt down about 250 feet, but when about eleven feet at the bottom caved in, the powers at Portland concluded it was time to halt. So work was stopped at once. It is said tbat the officials at Portland expected to reach water in at least 100 or 200 feet, while the contrac tor here was figuring on going dowu all of 500 feet. A Portland party had the contract at $0 per foot, while the party who came here to do the work took it at . Fireman Harry Frewing and bride are back in the city and are looking for a suitable place for housekeeping pur poses. Ben Snyder, the engine w iper from Dillard, has been promoted to the job of hostler s helper, and is therefore a resident of this city. - ; Nelson St. Onge, boss carpenter of the "concrete gang", is mourning the loss of a fine water spaniel dog, which was sent to him recently as a present from some of his Khode Island friends. The ani mal has sfayed away and Mr. Onge misses it greatly. He would gladly pay a reward for its return. "Frenchy" Aul.in, the cartoonist, is now on the night shift and his genial presence is very much missed by the other boys. Ben. Doss, the cab wiper, is entertain ing his nephew, W. A. Doss, who has just come from Yiriii'i, III., and who may conclude to make this city his future home. He will at least spend the winter here.
